“She’s here,” Neo answered. “At least, her energy is all over here.”

“Meaning she’s hiding,” I summed up and shook my head. “Willa likes to play hide and seek, huh?”

“Seems that way,” Neo agreed before footsteps emerged from our left.

We both grew tense as this individual’s aura was cloaked so perfectly, but in mere seconds, Milo appeared.

“Milo?” we said in unison as the fae emerged from the shadows of the forest.

“You guys were taking longer than expected, so I assumed things didn’t go down the steamy route,” Milo suggested as reached where we stood. “Where’s Willow?”

“Willa,” we again stated in unison, which made Milo arch an eyebrow while his golden eyes darted between us.

“Right.” He drawled out the word but didn’t question it further as he took a sniff of the air. “Willa’s nearby though. Feels like she’s right there.”

He pointed forward, confirming Neo’s prediction, but we all couldn’t see anything.

“Is she setting up an illusion or something?” I decided to ask. “We’ve honestly not hung out with Willa long enough to know what skills she carries.”

“That’s true but the problem is, this doesn’t feel like regular witch magic, does it?” Neo offered with a hint of uncertainty.

The fact that he couldn’t clock it left me feeling unsettled.

“Because it’s not,” Milo muttered. “I think we should call Dimitris over here.”

I was going to ask the prime question why, but Neo was already on it.

“Dimitris? We need you here now.”

There was no response, but the shift in the air tugged at my instincts, which was why I glanced over to my right to see Dimitris emerging from the trees to meet us.

He seemed calm as ever but the wrinkle of his nose was followed with a deep frown.

“Where’s Willow?”

“Willa,” all three of us countered, which triggered a far-away giggle that got our attention once more.

“She’s there,” Neo emphasized and pointed forward. “Yet we can’t see her. You can smell her, no doubt, but it’s like she’s hidden behind an invisible curtain of some sort.”

“A curtain,” Dimitris muttered but looked far more concerned than he probably wished to portray.

“You’re not telling us something,” I acknowledged while staring at our Alpha. “What’s bothering you?”

Dimitris stared at each of us before he finally revealed something unexpected.

“Our lovely assassins that were taking a nap,” he began. “They’re gone.”

“Meaning they’re dead?” Neo offered.

“No.” Dimitris shook his head. “They’re not in their sleeping places. In fact, the entire field is empty.”

“Did they wake up and run away?” I asked and looked to Milo. “Didn’t you say they were gonna wake up?”

“I lied,” Milo reveled. “I knew if I didn’t say something to break the tension between Ruby and Dimitris, it would escalate into something rather ugly to clean up.”

“So they weren’t even supposed to be awake,” Neo muttered. “Fuck. What’s going on?”

Dimitris was silent for a good minute before he looked to Milo.
