My eyes scanned for Onyx, remembering everything that had occurred in the Land of the In Between. Appreciating the view of the sky above, I took in the pink full moon that was still high in the sky.

How did I get here? Does it matter? I have to find my way out and locate Onyx and the others.

The reminder of our last interactions made a lump form in my throat as I actually feared meeting with them. I’d pissed off Dimitris after getting Jayce injured. Even with my own injuries and selfless actions that had saved their lives, I should have at least tried to explain better.

Now that I had a bit more clarity in my train of thought, I understood that Dimitris had not only been controlled at some point by that magic-user who ended up being the leader of that Dubai assassin pack. I also understood that he didn't share that Wolf Alpha to packmate connection with me the way he did the rest of them.

Had he felt my emotions of turmoil and protectiveness, maybe he would have realized I wasn't guilty?

I didn't regret hitting him -he deserved those few punches in the face -but I did feel bad for disobeying his orders out of anger and impatience. In a way, everything that just happened could have been for a good reason. Like the temporary house I hadn't even gotten the enjoyment of exploring since I’d been ambushed. I was able to take the lead role of murdering everyone who happened to be working for Garfield.

That innocent, nerdy, stuttering fucker was actually in charge of secretly turning all the guards that should have been protecting the Forbidden Pack against them, which was only a blessing in disguise since I was able to find and murder all of them before the others found out about the betrayal after it was far too late and their lives were at risk.

Who would have thought their web of protection had been tampered with for a while now and yet we somehow survived until this very day to find out the truth?

Or at least, I found out the truth.

I just had to get out of here and reveal the truth. The thought gave me the motivation to rise and find my way back home.

Find my way back to the Forbidden Pack, even if I have to beg upon arrival to be taken back into their protection.

I didn't need them to actually protect me -a task I did just fine on my own- but I needed them to understand what happened and why I did what I did.

Also, to explain why I set the house on fire. No regrets there.

When I sat up, it triggered a cascade of emotions but also reminded me of things I'd clearly forgotten.

"Sis...whydo you have to go away?"

"Mommy said it's for my own protection," I admit with a sad face. "But I'll be back! I don’t know when...but when I return, we'll play all day long."

"I don’t want you going with your dad," she whines. "Can’t you just stay here with Mommy and my daddy?"

"I wish." I laugh nervously. "But my dad isn't as nice as yours. That's why Mommy decided to leave him, because they would always fight like doggies."

"Hmph. If I had my way, you'd stay right here! You're my sister!"

I giggle and hug her. "I know, Ruby, but you'll be fine! We'll keep in touch, and when I'm older I could get those things they use to talk to one another."

"How can I protect you when you need me?" she whispers and hangs her head low. I blink my eyes to stop my tears as I reach out to stroke her head.

"Silly. I'm the older sister. I have to protect you. But if a time comes when you need to protect your big sis, I'm sure you'll do it effortlessly!"

"That's the new word you learned today!" she cheers. "And there will be fire! Lots of fire and I’ll look awesome."

I laugh and nod in agreement. "Yup! You'll look amazing saving me," I vow and hug her. "Let's go help Mommy with setting up the table before your dad gets home."

"Daddy said when you're a wolf, he'll be able to be your dad officially."

I stop to look at her as she squeezes my hand. "I can’t wait till you get your wolf so you don’t need to be a De Luca anymore."

My lips curl as I nod in agreement.

"Don’t worry, Ruby. I'll get my wolf on the Pink Moon like Mommy and our ancestors and then the world will see!"

"And I'll be your handy dandy assistant!"

"Haha, nah, Ruby! You're second in charge when I'm not around." I wink. "We're independent and powerful like Mommy!"
