Page 93 of Giving Up

She got herself in trouble for Ozy? She put herself at risk so Rose wouldn’t have to fight Billie herself, so she wouldn’t risk her scholarship.

“You…” I finally manage. “That…that was reckless and stupid, and you could have gotten seriously hurt.” I try to make the words sound harsh, I try to give her a lesson, but they all come out mumbled and it shows that I don’t mean any of them.

Why? Why is she so perfect? So selfless. Us Whites have brought her nothing but trouble. Nate lied to her, used her to spy on us. I fucked her over, bullied her, loved her, and let her down like she meant nothing to me. And at what point has she become such good friends with Ozy?

“WILLIAMS!” Coach Thompson’s voice trembles with fury.

“You got yourself in shit loads of trouble, Angel,” I smile at her.

“What are you gonna do about it?” she whispers. “Tie me up to the bed and punish me? Lik isn’t welcome this time.”

My eyebrows shoot up, but I can’t reply. Coach is already shouting at her and telling her she has to leave the field.

When did Jamie Williams become such a bad bitch? I fucking love it.

CHAPTER 15

Ghost of You – 5 Seconds of Summer

Jamie

I’m walking across the lobby of the hotel when a hand grabs me. I’m pulled into a room so quickly I drop my small suitcase.

“Why do you have your suitcase?” Jake whispers.

“I’ve been kicked out of the tournament,” I growl as I look around myself. “Really, Jake? A supply closet?”

He takes the ice pack the nurse gave me and weighs it in his hand. He shakes his head and chuckles.

“Remember that time I pulled you inside the janitor’s closet at school?” he says, still looking at the ice pack.

I nod, knowing exactly what he means. That day he saw Aaron’s picture in my locker.

“Yeah, after that I stopped looking for my brother. You opened my eyes.”

He looks up and there’s something in his eyes I can’t describe. Almost like guilt, but Jake doesn’t feel guilty.

“Or did you stop when Nate burnt your notepad?”

“Yeah, I guess,” I agree. “A bit of both.”

We’re both whispering like we’re about to do something wrong.

We’re about to do something wrong, aren’t we?

“That day, I was dying to kiss you,” Jake admits. “But when I saw that look in your eyes, the longing for your lost brother. Shit, it broke my heart for you.”

“Why are you saying this now?” I ask, confused.

“Did you really stop looking for him?”

I nod once. Almost ashamed.

He nods back, slowly, turning my words over in his mind.

“You opened up to me so much when we were together, didn’t you? About your brother, your dad, all the trauma you endured.”

It sounds so weird coming from his mouth. Especially with all the arguing we’ve done lately, I almost can’t believe we’re having a practically normal conversation about our relationship in a supply closet.
