Page 80 of Giving Up

“Come on girls,” Beth’s nasal voice exclaims. “LET’S GO STONEVIEW EAGLES!”

Some of the guys roar out a war scream. Most of the cheerleaders woo and shake their pompoms and Em and I look at each other.

“I’ll see you in three hours,” I sigh.

“Love you,” she replies as she heads out with the rest of the cheer team.

I quickly hug goodbye to my mom and head for my own bus.

As I walk inside the bus, I notice Ciara sitting on her own. I can’t believe Rose didn’t make it to the tournament. Coach T. is so devastated about it, but not nearly as much as I am. Guilt is wrecking me.

I wanted to convince Nathan to sign the slip, instead I let him seduce me, again. I let myself fall for him and let him fuck me without even a thought toward Rose. And now she won’t be able to prove herself to Duke’s scouts.

I walk to Ciara and wave at her for her to take an earbud out. “Mind if I sit here?” I ask.

She shrugs, “It’s not like Rose is occupying it.”

My mouth twists and I put my bag on the rack above our heads. My phone beeps in my pocket and I fish it out.

Nathan: You can thank me when you come back.

I frown at his cryptic text. I don’t even know why I unblocked him. I don’t wonder about the illogical things I do anymore, my pussy takes over my brain too easily.

“Oh shit! Coach wait!” Ciara exclaims.

I look up from my phone to see her facing the window. My eyes follow and my mouth falls slack as I see Rose running toward our bus, her backpack hitting against her back, her lacrosse stick in one hand and a paper I recognize too well in the other. The slip!

Behind her, Nathan’s Porsche Cayenne is driving out of the parking lot.

Rose pants as she hops on our yellow bus and settles herself next to the driver, holding her ribs with the hand holding the paper.

“I got it, Coach,” she pants. “It’s signed. For real this time.”

Ciara and I look at each other, wide smiles forming on our lips. I can’t believe it. Coach walks to Rose and grabs the paper. “Do I want to double-check if this is a real signature, White?”

She shakes her head smiling. “You can if you want to, it’s real.”

He eyes her suspiciously for another few seconds before putting the slip in his pocket. “Take a seat, but I hope you’re going to be a little fitter on the field. What a joke seeing you in this state after a short jog.”

Rose chuckles and walks toward us, I step away from the seat I was about to take, knowing she probably will want to sit next to her good friend. I take a few steps back so she can settle herself but instead of sitting she keeps going, grabs me, and hugs me tight. She straightens so high my feet lift off the floor.

“Rose,” I giggle. “What are you doing?”

Her raspy voice is in my ear the next second. “I don’t condone you sleeping with my brother to obtain things, and I hate you a little for breaking Jake’s heart…but thank you.”

I hear her thank you, but my heart stopped when she said I broke Jake’s one. She puts me back down and my breathing quickens.

“I…” I start but the words don’t quite come out. I don’t know what to say to that. Jake has no heart. That’s what I want to say, really. But she knows him better than I do, and if she says that, he must have had quite a reaction to finding me with Nate.

It’s pure jealousy. He’s a possessive guy, but he doesn’t love you. He used to do the same to Camila, get in fights out of jealousy.

Yes, that’s it.

“Let’s get to our seats, Goody,” she smiles down at me.

I don’t really think about Ciara and how she’s going to end up alone anyway. I’m just glad Rose doesn’t totally hate me for what happened last weekend. I texted her countless times during the week, asking for forgiveness, saying I shouldn’t have slept with Nathan. She didn’t reply. Only now do I realize it’s not because she was mad at me, I think she simply doesn’t want to be put in the middle of our love triangle.

“You’re not mad at me?” I look for reassurance once we’re settled in our seats.
