Page 26 of Giving Up

I’m about to say no when the tipsiness from the two beers I had kicks in. “Okay,” I giggle. “Let’s do it.”

“Oh my God, oh my God, I’m driving to Rose White’s new house,” Emily squeaks in the car.

“Please stop. She’s a student in our school, not one of your Instagram influencers. Left here,” I indicate.

“I’m only joking. So, which one?” she asks, looking at the mansions around us.

“That one with the weeping willow,” I point at the house on our right.

“This issoweird. Did you like…do things with Nate in there?”

“Jesus, Em, this was a horrible idea. Turn around.”

“You’re right it was,” she replies as she parks the car in Nathan’s driveway.

“Why are you not turning around then?”

“Because we’re adults now.” She turns the ignition off and turns to me. “We put up with our mistakes and bad ideas.”

“We have literally no reason to be here, I didn’t even text Rose. Please, I’ve put up with enough mistakes this year.”

“I’m feeling adventurous.” She wiggles her eyebrows at me.

“Whatever.” I groan as I hit my head against her headrest.

It takes Rose a while to open the door, and when she finally does, I wince in surprise, averting my eyes.

“Uh, hi?” Rose says, only wearing a towel, water dripping out on the floor.

“Apologies for interrupting your shower, we’re here to take you to Cole’s,” Emily explains with a huge smile on her face.

“It’s 7 pm,” she replies deadpan. Her eyes land on me. “Jamie, what the fuck?”

I shrug. “I don’t even know.”

She lets out a big sigh and steps away from the door. “You two are so fucking weird.”

I bite the inside of my cheek as I walk in. Emily stops dancing on the spot and hurries after me.

The hallway is just as huge as I remember and there is loud music coming from up the double staircase at the back.

“You’re lucky Nate isn’t here,” she says as she walks ahead of us, back up the stairs and turning left into a long hallway that I’ve never walked before.

Nathan’s room is at the end of the opposite hall, that I know for sure. I watch Rose’s long black hair dripping water as we all walk to her room. I’m not surprised she took the one as far from her brother’s as possible, despite the number of free bedrooms in this house.

“Where is he?” Emily asks and I have to pinch her arm. “Ow!”

‘What?’ she mouths in silence. This girl has no boundaries, way too extroverted.

“Fuck if I know,” Rose replies without a clue of what’s going on behind her. “He left with Sam about an hour ago.”

Rose’s room is a suite twice the size of Emily’s. No bed in sight as we walk into a living room about the extent of my house. The music is coming from where I’m assuming the bedroom is.

“This is nice,” Emily grins. She slumps on one of the two red velvet sofas and rests the heels of her boots on the oak coffee table in front of her.

Rose ignores her and turns to me. “New look?”

I shrug with a smile. “Meh.”
