I have to put a hand in front of my mouth to stop the whimper from escaping. Jake looks straight into my eyes and puts a finger against his lips. I nod at him and stay silent in my corner as Jake keeps creeping in closer with his gun tucked against him. I slip the gun at the back of my shorts and plaster myself against the wall.
That would have worked, if only Sam and Rose hadn’t suddenly burst through the main door. Sam’s shirt is bloody, but he looks like he’s still got the situation under control.
“Your men are a little too easy to kill, Dimitri,” he smiles. “I thought you’d offer us a real challenge.” His British accent makes him sound even more smug than he intends. But he isn’t holding a gun anymore.
“Why do you need a challenge? You’ve already lost. Look at your boss,” Volkov chuckles as he kicks Nathan in the ribs. “He flew too close to the sun.”
The groan of pain that escapes Nathan brings tears to my eyes.
“That’s not my boss,” Sam calmly replies. “That’s my brother. And you made a big mistake going after him.” He nods and Jake gets the message straight away.
While the three men’s attention was on Sam and Rose, Jake got closer and in one swift move, he shoots both of Volkov’s bodyguards.
In a panic, Volkov pulls out his gun and grabs Nathan. He forces him up, brings his back to his chest, and wraps an arm around his neck before putting the gun against his temple.
“No!” Rose cries out. Her arm extends, her fingers desperately trying to grab the brother she can’t reach.
“Alright, this is over for you.” He backs away until he’s facing all of us and we all gather closer. “Drop your gun,” he shouts at Jake.
He doesn’t hesitate one second, he drops it to the floor and slides it toward Volkov with his foot.
Jake puts me behind him, and we all watch helplessly as Volkov takes steps closer to the door.
“This is what is going to happen,” he snarls. “You’re all going to get on your knees with your hands behind your neck.”
Is this how we die? After everything that happened? Everything we’ve been through? Shot because Volkov is taking over Bianco?
I can hardly believe it.
“Don’t do it,” Nathan growls. “Let him fucking kill me.”
He’s barely conscious, but he’s still aware we’re all about to get sacrificed like lambs.
Despite Nathan’s request, we all get on our knees. I lock my hands behind my neck and suck in a breath. This looks too familiar. The feeling I had that night with my dad on his knees, with Aaron and I shrinking into the corner of the room.
“It’s going to be okay, Angel,” Jake whispers as he puts his own hands behind his neck.
I heave for a breath that doesn’t come.
“Jamie,” Rose says as sweetly as her hoarse voice allows her. She puts a hand behind my shoulder blades and rubs up and down.
“I said hands behind your neck,” Volkov shouts as he presses the gun harder against Nate’s temple.
“She’s having a panic attack,” Rose snaps back. “Give me a fucking minute.”
Volkov replies something about not caring about panic attacks when I’ll be dead in a minute, but I can’t really hear him. My senses are all focused on Rose and her hand that suddenly stops rubbing. She’s just grabbed the gun that I forgot was tucked in the back of my shorts.
My ears are ringing from fear. She can’t do this, it’s too dangerous.
But it’s our last resort.
I see her sharing a look with Nate and he smiles. His teeth are covered in blood, it’s dripping from his mouth.
“Ozy,” he coughs. I can still hear the warning behind it, the understanding of what she’s about to do. I really think he’s going to tell her not to move. But all he says is, “Don’t miss.”
It happens so fast, Volkov can’t even realize she’s moving. She’s like lightning, one second her hand is on the small of my back, the next the bang is echoing in the room.
Blood spurts from where Volkov and Nathan are standing, and Sam jumps to his feet. Jake is on me as I try to get up. I feel myself lose my footing, but I need to know. They’re both down, there’s blood everywhere. We were far, she was on her knees.
