Page 134 of Giving Up

“She better.”

I hang up.

I’m not going to feel bad for Camila. She put Jamie’s mom in jail. She’s crossed so many lines at this point, I’m not sure what else would bring her back to reality.

I’m driving aimlessly around Stoneview now. I don’t want to go back to Chris’ and there’s no way I’m going home to Nate or Sam. I’m not even sure they’re there but I won’t take the risk.

The only person I want to see is Jamie. I want to explain myself, I want her to know that no matter how much of an asshole I am… I didn’t do this to her and her mom.

When I get out of my own head, I recognize Silver Falls and enter the parking lot at the bottom of the trail that leads to the top of the falls. It’s automatic for me to grab my phone and text Jamie.

Jake: I fucked up a lot of things when it comes to you. But I didn’t send that document to the police. I think we should talk. I’ll wait for you where we had our first date, we can watch the sunset together.

My thumbs hover over the keyboard for a few seconds of hesitation before I send the text and make my way up the falls.

But two hours later, when she hasn’t shown up and the sun has gone down, panic overtakes me. What if…what if Bianco finally put his threats into actions? I try calling her a few times, but she doesn’t pick up. So I call Emily instead.

“How dare you try to talk to me,” she snaps.

“Em, I didn’t send that document!”

“I don’t care. You wrote it up in the first place!”

I let out a long huff, really fucking tired of justifying myself.

“Look, I called to check if she’s okay.”

“She’s not with me. I picked her up from the cemetery. We spent a little time at her house so she could pick up her phone and then I dropped her at church. She wants to be left alone.”

“The cemetery?”

“It’s the anniversary of her dad’s death. Did you guys even date?! God, you’re such a prick.”

She hangs up on me and I can’t really blame her. How did I not know that today was her dad’s death anniversary? It also means it’s the same date she got kidnapped. That her brotherdisappeared.

I walk back down to my car, settle behind the wheel and look at my phone. Still nothing from her. I’ll try her again and if she doesn’t pick up, I’m showing up at her house.

The ringing drives me crazy with anxiety. Come on, Angel. I hear her pick up, but she says nothing.

“Jamie? I’ve been trying to get through to you. Are you still at church?”

“Ah, sorry brother. She’s not at church anymore, but she’s definitely on her knees.”

I almost drop my cell, my blood turning freezing cold. Nate’s voice is so smug I want to cut his tongue and feed it to him.

“You’re lying,” I whisper in disbelief.

“Stop calling her, Jake.”

“Put her on the phone. Right fucking now.” I grit my teeth.

“I’m afraid she can’t talk. You know, mouth full and all that. It’s rude to.”

“I’m going to fucking kill you.”

“I think I’m already in heaven,” he chuckles. “I can’t believe I almost let you take her away from me.”

I throw my phone to my right. It hits the window and falls on the passenger seat beside me. Fucking asshole. I punch the steering wheel hard enough to make it scream in a loud honk. I do it enough times that some people around the parking lot start to look at me.
