“I don’t know, they don’t get to live to tell the tale,” Mateo concludes.

“Mateo, please,” Ozy begs in a shaking voice. “Let’s talk. He didn’t know…he didn’t know who you were.”

“Is that your boyfriend?” Bianco asks her in all seriousness. That fucking pedophile.

“No!” she almost shouts in panic. “We…that…”

I shake my head with her as she speaks. “He’s our previous foster brother. Mateo, lower your gun.”

He wouldn’t kill him, right? He can’t do that. He’s already ruined our lives, already tore us away from the only family that ever loved us.

“Please, just let him go home,” Rose pleads.

She says another string of words in Italian. I don’t catch much, she’s too fast and says too much. I know she’s just as scared as I am right now. If anything happens to Chris…

I swallow the rock that has formed in my throat. I can’t even imagine.

“Come here, Rose,” Bianco orders.

She walks to him in the least threatening way possible, slowly, almost on her toes.

“I’ll let him go. But you know this is going to cost you, right?”

“I know,” she whispers.

His free hand slides underneath her thick black hair and wraps around the back of her neck. “Whose initials are those?”

“Yours,” she replies instantly.

“That’s right.”

I have to look away. I feel too sick, my throat is too tight. His other hand is still pointing a gun at my best friend, and I have to watch silently as my twin trembles from fear and disgust. My heart accelerates, the room spins, and it takes all my strength to stay upright. To not run to him and bash his head against the wall, to not put any of their lives at more risk.

“Nate. Your office. Now,” Bianco concludes as he lowers his gun.

He lets go of Rose and she stands still until Nate, Sam, and Bianco have disappeared into Nate’s office. As soon as the door closes, she practically teleports next to Chris, bumping into his chest as he takes her in his arms.

“You need to leave,” she speaks, her words muffled in the curve of his neck. But the way his arms tighten against her, I don’t think he’ll leave without her. The way his eyes won’t leave mine, he won’t leave without me either.

“You should go, Chris.” I know he can hear the pain in my voice.

“You already know my answer.”

“We can’t come with you,” I insist. I’m so cold, so shut off from any emotions. He should take the hint and just leave.

He smiles at me, takes a couple of steps back, and sits down on the first step of the staircase.

“I guess we can all wait until they come out of that office. Fingers crossed I won’t take a bullet to the head tonight.”

“Don’t do this.” Ozy follows him and she settles between his legs, putting her hands on his shoulders as he looks up at her. “This is nothing,” she reassures him. “He doesn’t scare me. He only does if I know he can get to you. You don’t want to be involved in any of this, Chris.”

My friend shakes his head. “I can’t. I can’t leave you guys with him.”

My twin and I exchange a look and silently agree. We can’t have Chris here. It’s too dangerous. We’ll put our lives at risk if it means he’ll leave.

“Fine, we’ll come home with you,” I huff.

“We’ll have to come back here tonight though,” Ozy concludes.
