“Looks like it. That your scene?” I questioned, meeting her gaze as I sipped my drink.

“A hook-up? Hell, no. I still have my v-card.”

“Evan’s turned on by power, isn’t that right, E?” Xael speared her fingers through Evan’s wild blonde mane and pulled her close.

So close, I thought they were going to kiss.

“Damn right,” Evan whispered, staring into Xael’s eyes, until finally Evan broke away, lust raging in her eyes.

“Let’s drink and wait for that asshole to get here,” Xael muttered, shoving her empty champagne glass at the cute guy. “What the fuck is this shit, anyway?”

The way she spoke in her thick accent made me chuckle. The guy just laughed, reached over and snagged the bottle of vodka from the counter, and pushed it toward Xael.

“Now, we’re talkin’,” she cheered, and took a swig.

We made our way over to the sofa. Evan introduced me to people along the way. Xael just stared daggers at another woman dressed in Dior until she left with a mutter. Then we settled in, drinking and laughing. Evan and Xael took me under their wing, pointing out who was who as the party raged.

Until the elevator opened and in walked Lazarus Rossi.

“That guy right there,” Xael muttered without shifting her hard gaze. “You wanna stay right away from him, okay, Anna? That asshole is where nice girls like you go to die.”

He didn't even give us a glance, striding through the apartment like a lion on the hunt, looking for someone, until his gaze stopped on me. He shifted that gaze to Evan, then to Xael as she flipped him the bird. With a laugh, he looked away.

I wasn’t gonna lie. The guy scared me. He had anunhingedlook about him. Rings glinted on his fingers as he shoved them into the pockets of his ripped black jeans. That guy didn’t give a shit about designer labels. His currency was malice. He slipped away into the hallway that led to the bedrooms.

“Looks like someone’s in trouble,” Evan said, and grabbed Xael’s bottle.

The music raged and the voices were deafening, still Lazarus didn’t return, not for ages. When he did, his jaw was clenched, and his gaze was cold…like he'd seen something he didn’t like, something he was planning on correcting.

“Where the fuck is this guy, anyway?” Xael grumbled, and checked her phone.

It was after nine already.

We’d been partying and drinking here for well over four hours, and still no sign of Baldeon.

Kat and Damon stumbled back in a few minutes later. Kat adjusted her dress. Damon’s hair was ruffled and his shirt was unbuttoned.

So that’s what'd pissed Lazarus off? Had he watched them?

The thought of that was explosive.

The elevators doors opened again and a collective cheer swept through the room as all heads turned. But it wasn’t Baldeon who strode into apartment. It was the one they called the Commander. The same guy who'd met my father at the dock and told him to leave, without me.

But this time he wasn’t alone.

He was flanked by security. Men dressed in suits who scanned every face in the apartment. Fear plunged deep…they knew...the thought hit me.They were after me.The cheer turned into mutters of concern.

“Quiet, everyone,” the Commander lifted his hand, quieting the wave of fear. “I’m sorry, but the party is over. I need everyone…and I mean everyone,to go back to their apartments. You’ll be escorted by security. I want to assure you, this is for your protection.”

“Why?” a guy called out from behind me. “Where’s Bal, and what the hell is going on?”

There was nothing comforting in his eyes.

Nothing comforting at all.

Concern exploded into panic, that swept through the room like a storm.

“Okay…okay,”the Commander called for quiet. “There’s been a development and the truth is, we don’t know where Baldeon is. He was released this afternoon from the infirmary and hasn’t been seen since. So, if anyone has any information, I urge you to come forward. The rest of you need to go home.” He turned to the guards behind him and swept his hand through the air. “You’ll be guarded until we know more.”
