“Can’t trust you,” Anna slurred in my arms.

As much as I hated to hear the words…right now, I didn’t fucking blame her.

I hefted her higher, still lightheaded from the gas, and stumbled forward. I moved so damn slow, only one slow goddamn step at a time. My stomach rolled, and my chest felt crushed, like a fucking ton of concrete weighed me down. Maybe it was…maybe it was my fucking tomb calling.

He knew…he fucking knew who she was.

Of all the goddamn people, now I had to deal with the fucking Welsh?

I thought about calling my father, thought about coming clean. Jesus Christ, I could hear his fucking screaming already. I was a failure in his eyes anyway, how much further could I fucking fall?

“You won’t find him,” Anna murmured as I forced myself to stride faster and faster, desperate to get out of the goddamn building and into fresh air. “Hiding…hiding in Moris Dime.”

I lowered my gaze as she whispered. She didn’t know what she was saying.

And didn’t know who she was saying it to.

Ninety-five million dollars.

That’s how much that little piece of information was worth.

One expensive fucking secret.

“Won’t find him,” she whispered, her eyes jerking under the lids.

“Quiet now,” I soothed, and pulled her higher as I stepped out of the hallway and into the foyer.

My breaths were lighter, but my feet weighed down. Not as heavy as my fucking heart though. I lowered my head as movement came from outside the door. Mateo headed toward me, his commanding strides saying he meant business. He lifted his gaze, catching my movement through the glass doors, and yanked them open as I neared.

He took one look at Anna in my arms and his expression darkened.

“She’s fine,” I growled. “But you might want to get a doctor down to room 62. There’s others down there.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” he muttered.

I just barged forward, almost pushing the bastard out of the way. It was all his fault anyway. Him and every other motherfucker that sat on the Commission. Fucking rats. That’s all they were, scurrying on a sinking fucking ship, desperate to bite and infect anyone they could on their way out.

The Commission was failing.

They knew it.

I knew it.

But until it shattered and fell, there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. So I played my part of the first son and tried to stay away from their fucking games…this time I'd almost made it.

Sunlight hit her face, making her whimper and reach for me. Her nails dug deep into my arm. The goddamn slice along my palm was opening even more, pulsing and stinging. I could almost smell my blood. But I kept going, lifted my head to the building in the distance, and focused.

Step by step.

Whimper by whimper.

The doors to my apartment building opened.

The elevator was next. Max strode out, his gaze moving over me before finding her in my arms. “What happened?”

“Sodium thiopental happened.”

“Jesus.” He winced and jerked his gaze to mine.
