Chapter 13

RACHEL

IcradleMariato me while I stand in front of the Christmas tree. Maria nuzzles my chest. She’s so cute, especially in her reindeer outfit. The hood is covering her face, displaying a fluffy red nose and shiny golden antlers. She gives us a little yawn before closing her eyes.

“Aww,” Lucas and Seth say while they hold up their phones, still taking pictures of us.

“All right, I think that’s quite enough photos for one day.”

Lucas frowns while I move away from the Christmas tree and to the couch. “But we didn’t get any pictures with Maria and her presents.”

“You mean our presents,” I say while caressing Maria’s little cheek.

Seth is looking at his phone, presumably flipping through all the photos he took of us. “Rachel’s right. None of those presents are for Maria. They're mostly for us so we can take care of Maria.”

Lucas rolls his eyes. “Well, we can at least pretend.”

Seth bobs his head. “Oh, yes. Would you also like for us to pretend feed Maria a Christmas cookie? Or perhaps pretend push her on a sleigh.”

I chuckle and shake my head.

“Yes,” Lucas says while tapping his chin. “That sounds like a wonderful idea, Seth.”

Seth groans and I bite back my laughter, knowing Lucas is not kidding.

“She’s not going to remember any of this anyway,” Seth says while trudging toward me and dumping his body on the couch.

Seth is right. Maria isn’t going to remember any of this, nor she will she care. She’s only a month old now. The only things she can do—aside from pooping, burping, eating, and sleeping—are making fists and moving her head from side to side when she’s on her tummy. Of course, Lucas and Seth took videos of all of this for Alex and Hunter to watch later. We applaud little Maria’s every little action. We probably come off as the most boring people in the world.

I think this is honestly the happiest I’ve been.

“Yeah, but we will remember,” Lucas says while taking another photo of me and Maria next to Seth. “And besides, poor Hunter and Alex are missing out. They’ll be pissed if we don’t take pictures of every single thing.”

Seth scowls. “What did I tell you about swearing in front of Maria?”

“You must be kidding me,” Lucas says with an eye roll. “Didn’t you say Maria won’t remember anything? I doubt she will remember me saying ‘pissed.’”

Seth hisses and covers Maria’s ears with his hands. “I told you not to swear!”

“And I told you she won’t remember.” I watch Lucas shove his phone back into his jeans and direct a very irritated scowl at Seth. “Why do you care anyway?”

Seth’s gaze shifts to Maria and I smile as I watch him poke her little nose. “Because I want her first word to be ‘daddy.’ Not pissed, or fuck, or damn.”

“Well, good luck with that,” I say while bumping my shoulder against Seth’s. “Because her first word is definitely going to be ‘mommy.’”

Seth chuckles and throws an arm around me. “Ha!” He cackles. “I doubt that very much.”

I raise an eyebrow at him. “You wanna bet?”

“How much?”

I look upward, pretending to think of a number. “Fifty bucks she says ‘mommy’ first.”

Seth scoffs. “You’re on.”

Lucas sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. “I swear, I feel like I’m still living in apartment with college students.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask while giving him a teasing frown. “I am a college student.”
