Oh my God, this woman.

He forced himself to pull back. They were both breathing hard, their faces inches apart. “So that patch of yours is fully operational?”

She smiled. “It is.”

“Then what are we waiting for?” He took her hand and led her to the bedroom.

Soft moonlight filtered into the room as he pulled Sara’s shirt over her head. He stroked her face, kissing her softly. She needed to be loved right now, not devoured.

Loved? Where did that come from?

Jack pushed the thought from his mind, and they quickly undressed each other before sliding between the sheets of her bed. He stretched out next to her, propping his head in his hand as he rested on one elbow. He slowly drew one hand down the side of her neck, over her collarbone, and finally cupped one full breast. Unable to resist, he bent over and drew it into his mouth. Her skin was like warm cream, and she moaned, arching her back closer.

Sara possessed the most incredible breasts he’d ever seen. He had literally had dreams about them. He moved back to her ear, hard as a rock as he pressed himself against her thigh. “Don’t ever doubt how sexy you are. Can’t you tell what you do to me?” he whispered against her ear. Moving his mouth back to hers one fluttery kiss at a time, Jack slid his tongue in, wrapping it around hers as he fanned his fingers over her stomach. Then he moved his way lower. She opened one leg and gasped as he slipped his fingers home. Pressing harder against his mouth, she murmured, “I really want you.”

I noticed.

He smiled but didn’t say the words out loud, not wanting to disturb the chemistry that was building. She opened wide and urged him on top of her. He eased his way inside, fully naked for the first time. The intense sensation—the sheer intimacy of it—rocketed through him. “Oh God. You feel amazing.”

She laughed, a deep, soft sound that was different from her usual laugh, and a shudder wracked him. They moved faster, and he completely gave in to his own need, drowning in the all-encompassing sensation. He growled deep in his chest, and Sara cupped his ass with both hands, urging him on. He continued driving into her as his climax rose and surrounded him. He froze in place, crying out at the force of it.

Slowly, he regained the use of his muscles, languidly kissing across Sara’s neck. He shifted half-off her, tracing his hand down her side then up her thigh, wanting to give her a small sense of what he’d just experienced. She grasped his wrist, stopping the motion. “You don’t need to.”

He faced her. “I might be clueless, but I’m not that clueless.”

She gave him a warm, almost shy smile. “Jack, you already gave me everything I needed.” She lifted his hand to her mouth and kissed it softly.

He enfolded her, their arms wrapping tightly around each other. Oh, my Sara. I’m not sure we want the same things in life, but, my God, we are good together.

CHAPTER 20

January...

Sara stood in the stuffy gear room, fanning herself with one hand to ward off the afternoon heat. There was an air conditioner high on one wall, but it only got turned on when Alex worked on equipment. Electricity was expensive on the island, and not something to be wasted. She and Jack were back on solid ground since their tiff and the make-up session afterward. It had been a long time since she’d been with a man who saw her. The real her.

The Sara she tried to keep hidden.

But that night, Jack had looked deep inside and hadn’t blinked. Sara just had to decide whether that thrilled or terrified her. She wasn’t cut out to be Betty Crocker and he seemed ok with that. For now, at least. She had discovered that the future generally worked out as it was meant to, so she didn’t worry about things too much.

To her relief, Christmas had been a low-key affair. Sara and Jack had held true to their agreement and skipped presents for each other. Jack worked the morning at Ocean Surf, and it was also Hope’s turn to work the holiday. She and Alex had set aside a long table in the restaurant for employees who didn’t have dinner plans. Sara and Jack joined them, along with two housekeepers and several landscapers. Hope helped with the dinner service, so Alex acted as their host. It had been a very touching dinner, with the leaders of Half Moon Bay making sure no one felt left out on the important holiday.

Hope and Alex had presented each employee with a generous Christmas bonus, Hope explaining it was because they wanted to share a windfall they had received. As part of the management team, Sara received $5000, and even part-time employees received $1000.

A smile still graced Sara’s face as she approached the neatly arranged gear area, excited about starting the new year, as well as the prospect immediately ahead. She picked up a rental regulator and slung a BCD over her shoulder as the door opened. Expecting Jack, Sara still smiled as Zach entered. “Closing up shop?”

“Yeah,” the boy said. “Just makin’ sure I cleaned everythin’ up. You goin’ divin’?”

She nodded. “Just waiting for Jack, who’s teaching an intro class. He’s going to show me the coral nursery!”

Finally...

Zach opened his eyes wide, and enthusiasm poured out of every cell in his body. “Oh! You’ll love it. I’ve dived it twice with Alex. He actually let me start some new fragments! It was so cool.”

Sara laughed. Zach was infectious—everyone loved him. “I’ve been eager to see it too, but couldn’t work out a time with Jack until now. You want to join us?”

“I’d love to!”

She had tagged along in Jack’s group twice now, but had never dived alone with him. Her heart slid a little as that prospect disappeared, but it wasn’t like they’d never have another opportunity. “Excellent. I’ll have two experts to show me.”
