But as Raine stared into the man’s eyes, he knew Matt was here to reclaim what had always been his.

Chapter 28

Lucy stared into the eyes of the man she’d started to hate. He was holding his little girl, but his eyes had met hers and so much emotion bubbled to the surface.

Matt bent down and held Tatum tighter. “I love you. I love you.” Tears streamed down his face.

The scene was so striking. So moving. Matt was tough enough to brave the middle of the hurricane. That’s how much he would sacrifice for his daughter, and if it meant he’d have to die, he wouldn’t have thought twice about it. That was the man she loved.

Tatum burst into tears as she buried herself in his arms. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I didn’t know the storm would be so bad. I’m so sorry.”

Lucy saw Raine out of the corner of her eye. He was leaning against the opposite wall, arms folded over his chest. She felt horrible that this whole thing was happening in front of him. He really was a good friend to her.

Her heart hammered in her chest as she waited. She felt so vulnerable as these feelings rushed back.

Matt stood and patted Tatum on the shoulder. “Just a second, Tatum. There is something else I need to do.”

His gaze met Lucy’s.

The thing about love, the thing Lucy had known the whole time about Matt, was that if he came back to her, she didn’t have a chance of denying him. She could never say no to him.

He moved toward her, his arms open. “Luce, I’m so sorry. I need you. I love you.”

But she hadn't forgiven him yet. She didn't move.

He put his arms down and reached for her hand. "Luce, I'm so sorry. You were completely right about everything and …" he trailed, inhaling a long breath. "I'm sorry I didn't trust you and I'm sorry for ever leaving."

So many emotions flooded her. "You hurt me."

His lip trembled. "I know. I was an idiot and I'm so sorry." He pulled her in and bear hugged her, whispering into her ear. "Please, forgive me. Please. Because I love you and I want us to be together." He pulled back.

Tears ran down his cheeks. "Please."

She softened.

"Please, Lucy, he was an idiot," Tatum said.

Lucy turned to the little girl and couldn't help but laugh.

Matt grinned at her. "Thanks, baby."

Lucy turned back to Matt.

He suddenly dropped to his knee. "Forgive me, Luce." He took her hand. "Forgive me and marry me and I promise I'll spend the rest of my life proving to you that I love you and I want you and I want … us. A family. A life. A home. Please…"

Like a moth to the flame, she couldn't stop from reaching for him, holding him tightly against her, bursting into tears.

Matt stood and held her. "So that's a yes."

She laughed and cried, holding him. "That's a yes."

"Yeah!" Tatum rushed toward them.

She and Matt opened their arms and Tatum rushed in between them. "This is the person you always should have married dad, our Lucy."

Warmth flooded Lucy and she pulled back, grinning down at the little girl.

"That's right," Matt said, leaning in and kissing her. "Our Lucy."
