“What?”

“You’re out here kissing someone else, so has it even mattered?” The words were out before he knew what he’d done.

Lucy stopped dancing, pulling her hands back. “You’ve been kissing her.”

“No, she kissed me. And we know how Charlene is. But this guy? Really?”

Lucy glared at him. “How dare you.”

Matt threw a hand toward Raine, who was staring at them from the side of the dance floor. “Really, Lucy? You’re out here kissing that dude? Really?”

“Right. Again, you were just kissing your ex right before asking me to dance. I guess it was a good thing we didn’t talk the past couple of months. Apparently, we don’t have much to talk about.”

Matt sucked in a breath and tried to figure out how to express himself. “Luce, just give me a sec. Please.”

Charlene was suddenly next to Matt. “Let’s dance.”

Irritation poured through him. “Just wait, Charlene.”

“Let’s not make a scene.” Charlene grabbed his arm. “Dance with me.”

Lucy shook her head and walked away. “Whatever.”

On autopilot, he began to dance with Charlene.

She slipped both arms around his neck and pulled him closer. “Honey, I’ve been thinking.”

He didn’t respond. His eyes were pinned on Lucy, who was huddling close to Raine in whispered conversation.

“Honey.”

He turned his attention to Charlene. “What’s that?”

“I think we should get married again … for us and for Tatum.”

Chapter 19

Raine watched as Lucy danced with Matt, and he decided to take a moment. He was reeling from those kisses. Dang, that woman. Gah. He clenched a hand into a fist, then let out a breath. He didn’t like being used by Lucy, but hedidlike kissing her. Shoot.

He liked Lucy a lot. He liked her more than he’d liked anyone in a long time. Over the past couple of days, he’d grown to like her even more. Could he make a new life with someone like her? He could be happy. He could be someone who had a family and children.

The thought surprised him, and he pushed it out of his mind.

He walked toward the house, wondering if there was a bathroom close. Then he nearly ran into Marshall, who was holding a baby.

Marshall put a hand on his shoulder. “Dude, I know this might sound brutal to say to you, but you know she’s in love with Matt, right?”

“I have eyes. I can see that.” There was no need to rub it in.

Both of them turned and looked back to the dance floor. Lucy was still dancing with Matt.

He turned back to Marshall. “Can I use your bathroom?”

Marshall nodded and then started walking with him toward the house. “Sure. Follow me.”

They’d opened the security gate that separated the beach from the house. There were lights along the path, and tables had been set up around the swimming pool.

Marshall turned back to him. “Trey and Ava are really great about making their home available when we have events like this.”
