Finally, Trent kept Liberty in his arms, but turned to look at all of them. "We were in the middle of a firefight and Hunter had gone down, I'd pulled him back aways to make sure he was safe, then I went to lay down fire. Right before I got to my position, I stumbled and fell off the side of the little cliff that was giving us the high ground. Before I knew it, I'd been swooped up by some Taliban and my head was hooded and zip ties on my hands. I heard an explosion just as they shoved me in the back of a van."

Cheryse could not believe it. The whole tale sounded … fantastic and crazy and completely like something Trent Stone would tell them.

Finally, the rest of them rushed at him, taking their turn to hold him, cry for a second, be reassured by him.

As Trent held Kensi, he asked, "So where are my bros?"

Kensi pulled out her phone. "We need to text them, they're on this goose hunt for treasure, of course."

Ava moved to Trent, putting an arm around him. "They've been tracking Banks and they think they've found something the key might go to.

Out of the corner of her eye, Cheryse noticed a flicker of movement outside. It was a man, in black clothing and a black mask. Frowning, she pointed at him. “Look.”

Lucy turned and gasped. “Who is that?”

“Who is who?” Ava asked, instantly moving to where they stood.

“There's a guy in black and a mask.” Cheryse sucked in a breath. “Oh my gosh. There's like five guys.”

Ava moved to a position where she could see better. “There's like ten guys.”

Cheryse’s gut twisted as fear shot through her.

Trent went into SEAL mode. "Everyone, get in the office. We’ve got company.”

Chapter 32

“There's nothing here,” Marshall said, throwing his shovel to the ground.

Hunter stopped shoveling and looked around. The hair on the back of his neck stood up, like Banks and his men would show up any second. They had been digging for over an hour and a half with no luck.

Brooks tapped on his phone. He’d been shoveling with all of them, but he looked perplexed. “The ground has been dug up before. You guys know that. We verified that. Whatever Banks was looking for, he's made enough passes around here to light up our radar screens the past two days. I thought this was exactly where he'd come, especially if we’re all here and he knows one of us has the key.”

Trey stuck the shovel in the ground and moved to Brooks’s side. “Something feels off. I don't know what it is, but this just doesn't feel right.”

Hunter moved beside them. “Agreed. I don't know what's going on, but if Banks was coming, he'd be here. That dude keeps tabs on everything.” If Hunter hadn't been a Stone man, Banks might have worried him. But he and his brothers could handle whatever came at them.

A tiny voice in his head said,But Trent always thought he could handle anything that came at him.

He ignored that voice. He didn't like doubt.

Frustrated, he tugged his phone out and saw a message from Cheryse.

He couldn't believe it. Warmth filled him and he let out a light laugh, unable to believe what he was reading. They'd left each other on such a toss-up; he hadn’t known where they stood.

Trey turned to him. “What's going on?”

Unable to hide it, Hunter grinned. “Reese just told me she loves me. She wants to be with me.”

Brooks glanced at him. “She texted you that?”

Hunter let out a roaring laugh. “Yes, she did.”

Marshall stalked toward them. “What? What's going on?”

Hunter laughed and threw both hands into the air, like he was celebrating a Super Bowl win. “Reese loves me. She wants to be with me.”

“Okay. That's good news.” Marshall turned to Brooks. “So, what are we doing?”
