Roger cleared his throat and stepped in front of her. “I shouldn’t have said that about your brother’s funeral. I’m sorry. But I have been thinking, I know your family likes to be part of philanthropic organizations. Maybe you’d like to set one up in your brother’s name. I could manage it for you. I know how to do that.”

Had Roger really just said that? Cheryse cringed at the look on Hunter’s face.

“You think we should give you money in my brother’s name?” Hunter asked, taking a step toward Roger, his face a thundercloud.

Roger retreated. “I …”

“Dude, you should never talk to me again, got it?” Hunter tapped Roger’s shoulder.

It wasn’t a hard tap, but it was hard enough to make Roger flinch.

Cheryse looped her arm through Roger’s and tried to pull him away. He didn’t know how to deal with guys like Hunter. Not that she knew how to, but she hoped she could defuse this situation. “We’ll talk another day.”

Roger let her pull him, then stopped and turned back. “Never touch me again or I’ll sue you.”

“You’ll sue me?” A menacing glimmer appeared in Hunter’s eyes, and he glanced around the bar and then back at her and Roger. “The guy who just asked if my family would give him money says he’ll sue me.” He barked out another loud laugh.

Cheryse was done with this. “Roger, let’s go. Clearly, we can’t talk to him.”

Roger turned with her and they resumed walking, this time faster.

“Don’t do me any favors, Reese,” Hunter called after them. “I lost my best friend a long time ago, and that actually wasn’t you.”

The dagger pierced her heart again, and this time it was being twisted. She refused to look back at him.

“Oh, and Roger?” Hunter called out.

Roger paused and turned back.

Cheryse tried to pull him. “Just keep walking.”

Roger met her gaze, then turned back to Hunter. “What?”

“Did Reese ever tell you about our make-out sessions?”

Cheryse froze.

Hunter grabbed a bottle from the table and took a long swig as Roger turned to her in question.

Cheryse pulled his arm again, anger and embarrassment surging inside her. “Ignore him.”

Roger allowed her to pull him away.

Hunter’s laughter sounded behind them. “Yeah, I didn’t think so.”

Roger didn’t speak for a long time. When they got to her house, he walked her to the door. Usually, he asked if he could stay to watch a show or something, but tonight he only stood there.

Cheryse opened her door and hesitated. She didn’t want to deal with this. She needed time to think and adjust, to deal with all these feelings she was having about Hunter. She wanted to slap him again, but she also wanted to throw her arms around him and get back to where they had been right after Trent had passed. “I’m tired tonight,” she said finally. “Sorry. Stop in before you leave tomorrow.”

Roger took her hand. “Are you okay? Is there something I should know about you and Hunter?”

“I’m fine,” she lied. There was no way to describe her history with Hunter. “Oh, and Hunter’s a grade-A jerk.” She moved inside the house, ignoring Roger’s concerned look. “Stop in tomorrow before you leave.”

Chapter 11

The next morning, Hunter awoke to banging on his door.

“Get your butt out of bed and get to work,” Trey ordered from the other side.
