She crossed her arms, and it seemed like she was thinking about asking something, but apparently she changed her mind. “Nothing on Banks or his thugs, right?”

Her unease had his attention, and he looked around, feeling as though someone might pop out. “Nope.” He should have checked in with Brooks today. “I’ll talk to Brooks tonight and get back with you.”

Cheryse’s eyes darted across her surroundings before narrowing. “Okay.”

“You okay? The fundraiser was all the magic and dreams you hoped it would be?”

Cheryse cracked a smile. “Just like Disney.”

He drew her in for one last hug. “Okay, I’m off to smoke a steak.”

She laughed. “Have fun.”

“We will.”

Cheryse pointed at him. “I’m dying to see her again, but Roger has all these stupid fundraiser dinners, tell her I’m sorry.”

He nodded.

“And make sure she comes to Lucy’s Christmas party.”

He gave her a thumbs-up. “Already on it.” He just had to figure out how to convince her to go.
