Oh shit.

He hadn’t vanished. He was now hovering above earth as Jamie held him by the shoulders a few feet away. The pair were moving quickly towards the door.

“The lady said go.”

“Holy shit, you’re huge.” Kenny looked momentarily shocked. “Put me down.”

“Absolutely not.” Jamie face was the picture of barely controlled rage. I could see it in the throbbing vein along his hairline.

My body hummed with something far darker than adrenaline.

Jamie looked at me.

I crossed my arms to hide my shaking hands. “He’s not dangerous. Can you just walk him out?”

The smallest hint of a smile curled Jamie’s lip, and he turned back to Kenny. “You lucked out tonight, asshat. Let’s go.”

With that, Jamie calmly walked to the front door, still dragging a now limp and sad-faced Kenny. The pair disappeared through the door, and I hurried to pick up the broom and find a way to make myself busy. Or to forget that there was a gorgeous billionaire acting as my personal bodyguard.

“You good?” Betty asked quietly. Her eyes were concerned.

“Yeah, I just hate how pushy he can be.”

“Do you want to head out? I can close up tonight.”

“No, actually, I’d really like to do it. It’ll give me a moment to catch my breath.”

I heard the door reopen, and then Jamie breezed through it, his eyes trained on me as he moved around the tables towards me.

“I’ll leave you to it,” Betty said quietly, moving back towards the kitchen to dismiss the rest of the still-lingering staff.

Jamie slowed, stopping when he was a few feet from me. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine. I just…” I fluttered my hands between us. “He surprised me.”

“It won’t happen again. Or if it does, Kenny and I will have another private meeting to discuss the ramifications of it.”

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“I did.” He stepped into my space slowly, his presence alone enough to send white-hot need through my veins. This mysterious man—a lawyer and my landlord—had just come to my rescue. And now, the way he was looking at me made my romantic heart pound.

Slowly, so carefully that I was sure he was just as nervous as I was, Jamie raised a hand to cup my cheek. “It’s my job to protect the people I care about.”

“You don’t even know me,” I protested, all the while leaning into his caress.

Jamie leaned in. “Maybe we should do something about that.”

With one final stroke of his fingers, he dropped his arm to move behind me, back into the bar space.

“I wash, you dry?”

I stared. “What?”

“The dishes, little one. The faster we get them done, the faster you can join me on our date.”

“Dishes. Right.” I sidled up beside him, grinning at the way the apron he tugged on only covered a small bit of his front.
