Chapter 1

Jamie

I loved making women scream when I was naked.

Generally, I was a pretty loud person, in and out of the bedroom. I could appreciate a vocal partner.

What I couldn't appreciate was that tonight, as I walked into my bathroom, sweaty, stiff in more than one way, and headed straight for the shower, there was a woman sitting in my bathtub.

Naked.

Wet.

Screaming.

And not the kind I liked after all. I flinched away, covering my eyes with one hand and my cock with the other. “Who the fuck are you?”

She stopped screaming temporarily, just long enough to whisper a shaky, “You’re not supposed to be here.”

“Well, I am. Now who the hell are you?”

There was a tiny ripple of water as I heard her shift even lower into the tub. I ripped my hand away from my face to point at her again. “I mean it. I want to know.”

My voice broke, a different kind of surprise quickly making its way through my mind. Because this woman, the stranger in my tub, was absolutely stunning. She hoovered in the water, bubbles hiding most of the best bits of her from my eyes. But her face was stunning, with bright hazel eyes, fair skin, deep-pink lips, and a wealth of long, dark hair swirling around her figure in the tub.

Now her mouth was moving, opening, shutting silently. But her eyes were staring hard at my other hand. Oh fuck. My cock was spilling out of my grip.

Growling, I turned and grabbed a towel from the top of the stack, wrapping it around my waist quickly. There was an intruder in my tub, a beautiful one, but I was not about to interrogate her with my balls dangling in thin air.

“I am so sorry. I clearly misunderstood.”

“Misunderstood? What on earth are you talking about?”

My naked intruder swallowed, the muscles in her long, slender neck drawing my attention. I could almost see the flutter of her pulse there. This woman, this invader soaking in my tub was no danger to me. I knew that from the first instant I had stumbled into her. And now, I was even more sure of it. She was terrified of me, and the thought was like a bucket of ice being thrown across my shoulders.

I was a big man. I had played defensive line in college, and even after slimming down during my years of law school and building Windham, Rayne and Calvin, I somehow retained my bulldozer-like appearance. Some women, I had found, loved the “could bench press me before breakfast” look, but many were worried about my size.

It seemed this delicate beauty fell into the second category. Taking a long breath, I bent my knees until I was crouching on her level.

“Easy there, I’m not going to hurt you.” I let my hands dangle, loose and relaxed, at my sides. Her eyes leapt to them and then back to my face, another big swallow on her lips. “My name is Jamie Calvin.” I pressed my hand against the bathroom vanity beside me. “This is my apartment. Can you tell me why you’re here?”

All the fight seemed to vanish from her in an instant. A soft, hitching sob escaped her lips, just before she slapped her hands over her mouth. Her shoulders worked up and down, and it took every part of my willpower to stay put where I was. I bit down on my lip, savaging the skin there as I forced myself to stay where I was.

My mother raised a gentleman, and now I was torn between comforting her and not touching a naked stranger.

“I’m so, so sorry,” the stranger sobbed, her cheeks pinking as she sank deeper into the bubbling water. “Can I please get out? I promise I’ll explain everything.”

“Of course,” I said instantly, encouraged by her intelligent, clear voice. I turned and grabbed a towel, tossing it lightly to land against the tub.

Taking it nervously, she looked back up at me. She bit her lip. “Mr. Calvin, would you mind turning?”

Mr. Calvin? Usually I abhorred that use of that name. But something about the way she said it was like a stroke of pleasure straight down my spine. “Only if you tell me your name. I need to know.”

She gave me a watery smile. “I’m Margot. Margot Beckett.” Impossibly, she reached one dripping arm from the tub and held it my way. I gripped it without moving, keeping my body away from her. “Housekeeping.”

Housekeeping? My brain was scrambling.

“If you don’t mind?”
