Page 54 of Wicked Debt

“There’s no deal today,” I said.

She looked surprised before she quickly recovered and walked over to the desk.

“What is it then?” she asked.

I threw the pictures that my father had given me in front of her.

“Yeah, so?” she said after she flipped through the pictures.

I recognized that tone and the way she held her body.

She was being defensive, and now I had to wonder why.

“So what?” I said.

“Why don’t you tell me, Elias?” she said, the faintest hint of a sigh in her voice.

“Kayla, what are you and him up to?” I said.

“We’re not up to anything,” she said.

“You sure about that?” I asked.

I had sat on the opposite side of my desk in the chair next to hers.

And now I leaned forward, my mouth close to her ear as I whispered.

After a moment, I pulled back to study her expression.

“If you have something to ask me, just ask,” she said.

“I already did. What are you two up to?” I said.

“Elias, I have no idea what you are talking about. Todd and I had dinner, as you well know. And that’s all,” she said.

“A single dinner, huh? And that’s it. So you don’t know that your little boyfriend Todd is a new player in the game and he’s trying to move up pretty quickly, probably with your father’s money?” I said.

She blinked.

It shouldn’t have been a tell, and most other people would have overlooked it, but it told me everything I needed to know.

She was holding something back.

I knew that.

And I fucking hated it.

Both because she thought she could keep things from me and because she trusted me so little that she felt like she had to.

“Kayla, you need to drop the games. If you know something, you need to tell me. Or there’ll be consequences,” I said.

She had been looking at the pictures again but shifted her eyes to mine, the dark brown orbs flashing with anger.

“Again with the threats, Elias?” she said, her disgust palpable.

I ignored it.

“No threats. Just promises, like I always say. You’re working so diligently to pay off that debt, but don’t test me. I don’t think you—or your father—would appreciate the results if you do,” I said.
