Page 3 of Wicked Debt

“I told you I’d prefer not to meet with him anymore,” she said.

“And I told you that you don’t get to make those calls. You go where I want, when I tell you to, and you do what I say,” I said.

She frowned. “I despise that man!”

It was a rare show of emotion from Kayla, and though I knew I shouldn’t, I couldn’t help but ask.

“Not that it matters, but why?” I asked.

“He’s…gross. He looks at me like he can see through my clothes. It’s disgusting. I feel like I need a shower after meeting with him,” she said.

She hadn’t been so forthcoming before, but she was being honest now and betraying emotion, which was something she almost never did.

In fact, I couldn’t think of a time when Kayla had shared a preference with me or had made any protest at all, despite how I pushed her.

That she was now meant something, and the desire to break Vahe’s jaw was almost undeniable.

Kayla drove me insane, but she worked for me and was under my protection and the protection of the Petrosyan family.

Anything that was a problem for her was a problem for me.

Still, I had a point to prove to her.

“Has he ever touched you?” I asked.

She looked almost hopeful, so hopeful that I knew she was honest when she answered.

“No.”

“Then deal with it,” I said.

Her expression fell, or at least started to.

But she recovered quickly, gained control of herself, and within a second, her expression betrayed nothing.

“Are the terms the same?” she asked a moment later.

The sound in her voice wasn’t exactly defeat.

I didn’t think I had ever heard that in her voice.

But the change in subject told me that she knew she would be wasting time pursing this.

Again, I had achieved my end.

But I didn’t feel even an ounce of the victory I had expected.

Wondered why for a moment before I shook it off.

Why didn’t matter.

What mattered was that Kayla never lost sight of who she answered to and never forgot that I—and I alone—was in charge.

“They are. And no matter what Vahe tries to say or do, don’t let him haggle you down,” I said.

“I’m more than capable of handling this, Elias. You must know that. Isn’t it why you insist I do so?” she asked.

“No. I insist that you do so because you owe a debt, and you will repay it however I see fit,” I said.
