Oh shit, as long as Fiona has been my sister I should know better than to tell a woman to calm down.
Instead of putting my foot any further in my mouth I just pull her into my arms and hold her until her breathing is back to normal.
“I can tell you that those men were after you, not me.” I finally say with a sigh.
“Who were you just talking to?” She looks up at me.
Thinking over what to say, I settle on the truth although it’s only a half truth.
“The people I work for.” Her eyes narrow at my face.
“That’s it? You’re not going to elaborate? Who do you work for?” She pushes away, demanding.
“I can’t tell you that.”
Jumping up from the bed she starts pacing and I just watch her. The way her body moves naturally seems to call to me in a way that I’m not used to.
My handler was right. She’s an obsession and a liability but I’m not willing to let her go.
She stops every few minutes, looking over at me before her pacing starts yet again as well as mumbling that I can’t decipher.
“So let me get this straight.” She pinches the spot between her eyes. “You work for someone that you can’t tell me who they are. Therefore I guess it’s top secret making it a government entity?”
“Not exactly.” I answer softly and she rolls her eyes.
“You’re making this difficult.” She sighs, sitting down next to me once more.
“I’m sorry. If I could tell you, I would. I would never lie to you but there are some things about my job that I will never be able to tell you.”
“Let’s move on. The guys that took you. What happened to them? Did they get away?”
More tricky questions from my little bird. I have to be careful here as well because even the MC has strict rules about keeping secrets within the club.
Raven nor I are part of that club even though my brother is married to one of the club members’ sisters.
“They did not get away.” I answer, holding her stare, expecting her to ask the inevitable question of what happened to them.
Instead she just stares back for a full minute before lowering her eyes.
“What now?” She asks and I take a relieved breath that she’s willing to drop it. At least for now.
“Now? Now I go after the man himself. Mendez.” Her eyes pop back up to my own.
“How are you going to do that? He could kill you.” She asks, breathing hard as her heart rate kicks up.
Reaching over, I cup her face into my hands.
“I need you to trust me when I tell you that I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe for the rest of my life.”
“Trusting you isn’t the issue, Gio. The issue is how long that life is going to be.” She answers with tears in her eyes.
Smiling back at her, I bring her face closer to my own. “No worries little bird, that life is going to be a long one as I’m going to need every minute of it to explore this obsession that I’ve had of you since I first laid eyes on you.”
Taking her lips with mine, I kiss her deeply until she relaxes once again into my arms.
