Raven

The last few days have been very different from the ones where Gio mostly avoided my company.

He even took me for a walk through the woods this morning after breakfast, holding my hand the entire way.

He still stiffens sometimes when I touch him in other ways but I’m determined that one day he won’t have such a reaction, at least when I’m doing the touching.

I frown to myself because I’m acting as if he and I will still be together after all of this is over. We don’t exactly know very much about each other.

“Why are you frowning?” His voice makes me jump because I didn’t hear him walk up.

Looking over at him, I say, “We don’t know that much about each other.”

“We know enough.” He says gruffly.

“No. We don’t. Not really.” I say.

He stares at me for several long minutes and I’m afraid he’s just not going to say anything else. Instead, he sits down next to me with a sigh.

“What do you want to know?” He asks.

“Where did you grow up?” I pop off the first question that comes to mind.

“A small town in Italy. My family has a small villa there that has this huge garden with every flower you can imagine. You would love it.” He looks over at me with a smile.

Looking at him closely, I realize he smiles at me more easily these days. That’s progress right?

“What do you do for work?” I ask and his smile falls from his face.

“Look, I’ve already concluded that it has to be something that allows you to find out things that others can’t and since I highly doubt it’s the same type of business that Scotty is in, I’m going to say it’s government related. What I’m not sure of is, what branch of government?”

We stare at each other and I refuse to be the one to look away. He knows nearly everything about me but I don’t know much about him.

“Will you accept the answer that it’s top secret and that I’m unable to share anything about it with you?” He asks with a seriousness that sets off alarm bells.

“You can’t even tell me if it’s the FBI or something?” I ask.

“I can’t let you know anything Raven. Your life, hell, both our lives depend on it.” His eyes go hard and I know deep down that he means exactly what he’s saying.

My thoughts though do not quieten down.

What part of our government could get away with such a thing?
