I’m about to demand more information but just then the real fucking Queen of White Summer walks in. Melinda Drake, the mayor’s daughter, with her yappy dog Mouse tucked under her arm like a football.
“Melinda, you know you’re not supposed to bring Mouse back. Just because Fiona isn’t here, doesn’t change the rules.” I narrow my eyes on her.
“Please Lily. I tried to leave her at the Doggy Daycare center. But, Sydney won’t let her stay unless I sign her up for obedience classes.” She rolls her eyes at the thought.
“Why don’t you sign her up then?” I ask.
“Have you seen the dogs in that class? They are huge; they could swallow my baby up in just one bite. Please Lily.” She begs.
“Uh hmm.” Clearing my throat, I point to Loki who is curiously eyeing up Mouse.
“Oh My God!” She screams holding Mouse so tight the poor chihuahua whimpers, then Melinda bolts out the door.
“Well I guess we can cross her off the schedule.” Arin comments as we both start laughing. We get to work setting up our stations.
I’m between clients when a man dressed in a fancy business suit walks in. He doesn’t look like our normal customer, but you never know what these guys are hiding under their suits.
“Can I help you sir?” I ask him.
“Yes, I’m looking for Lilyanna Harris.” He says, looking at me expectantly.
“That would be me.” I answer, a little confused.
He holds his hand out, “I’m Taylor Burns, you called me about a sensitive matter. Is there somewhere we can talk?”
“Arin,” I call out. “I’m going to talk to Mr. Burns in the office. Let me know if you need me.”
“Please call me Taylor.” He says as he follows me back to Fiona’s office.
“I’ve already met with Mr. Montgomery.” he begins. “But could you please tell me what you’ve witnessed.”
I tell him everything. It’s good that the shop is slow today because it takes over an hour. When we are finally done he steps out and looks around.
“This is a good little town.” He comments. “For the most part the people are nice, the streets are clean. I imagine it’s a great place to raise a family, Miss Harris.”
“Please call me Lily. Yes it is, you know I grew up in Cali but this place just feels like home to me.” I smile, looking around.
“I can definitely see the allure of the area. I’ll be in touch over the coming days. We’ll make sure that Mr. Montgomery comes out on top.” He says with a smile before he walks out the door.
Arin comes up next to me and watches him leave. “Damn girl all these men with fine asses, I just wanna squeeze those cheeks.”
I walk away laughing. “Arin you are something else girl.”
Arin and I are both working on clients a couple hours later when Fiona dashes into the shop. She is jumpy and excited so I ask the client to take a break.
As soon as she has both of our attention Fiona shouts out, “I’m an Aunt!” After a round of cheers and hugs. She whips out her cell phone and passes it around so we can all see pictures of Hunter.
While Arin is focused on the pics, Fiona pulls me aside.
“Are you sure you got this Lily?” she asks me.
“Fi, I have been handling everything just fine for the last week without you. I love you but you need this break. Don’t go looking for excuses to stay.” I tell her firmly.
“But..” She begins to interrupt.
“No buts allowed. See that sexy as hell man pretending not to be listening in on our conversation?” I point to Allesandro Baratta.
“He has been waiting months and months to show you his home in Italy. First the batshit crazy stalker, then the shop needed you, then your brother needed you. It will always be something. Fiona, I promise you nothing will happen to Poison Pen while you take a break.” I stress to her.
