Austin

There is a pet friendly park a few blocks away so we head there after picking up Loki. Lily has her fingers laced with mine while we walk. Neither of us are speaking. We are both comfortable with silence, we don’t need empty words to take up space in our heads. That is one of the things I think I am falling in love with about Lily.

Love? I think to myself before a grin takes over my face. Yeah, I can see it happening with her. She’s perfect for me, even if she doesn’t know it yet.

We have only been walking on the path for ten minutes when the clack of high heels hitting the pavement alerts me to someone behind us.

Glancing over my shoulder I groan when I see Erica. I give Lily’s hand a squeeze alerting her to the problem.

“What do you want now, Erica?” I demand, turning to face her without letting go of Lily’s hand.

“I need a place to stay.” She says without preamble.

“And …?” I encourage her to continue, not sure what she thinks I can do about it.

“You need to find us a place to stay.” She squares her shoulders, trying to stare us down.

“Why is that my job?” I seriously wonder what she is thinking.

“Those Wolfsbane guys kicked us out of the cabin. They claim it was a paperwork error. The cabin had been overbooked but I know it’s because of you!” She screeches at me.

“Erica, that was over a week ago. Where have you been since then?” I ask.

“At a hotel in the next town over. But I can’t afford to keep staying there.” Is Erica’s answer.

“Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt.” Lily says. “But it’s been over a week, we are waiting for the dna results.”

“Yes, so?” Erica snaps

“So why haven’t either Austin or myself seen the baby yet?” Lily stands firm.

“You don’t matter!” She replies to Lily with a snarky attitude but her voice turns sickly sweet when she faces me. “But Austin only has to ask. She is at the hotel with my boyfriend.”

She reaches out as if she is going to touch my arm but a growl from Loki has her taking a step back instead.

“Why is that, that thing here?” She snarls, looking down at Loki.

“This is a park Erica, where else would we walk our dog?” I ask.

I’m paying attention to the bitch’s face, so it catches me by surprise when she suddenly screams. Following her eyes down, I see Loki with his leg lifted, peeing on Erica’s foot.

Lily and I are both trying to hold back our laughter as we watch Erica stomping away. She gets about twenty steps, when she swings around and points at Lily.

“I’ll get you and your dog too.” She yells.

That’s enough that we both lose it. Lily is clutching her stomach from laughing so hard and there are tears streaming down my face.

“Did she just?” Lily stammers

“No.” I shake my head, still laughing.

“Yep, I think she just… Oh My God! This explains everything. She is the Wicked Witch, quick get a bucket of water!” Lily laughs some more. It’s beautiful to see, it lights up her face even more than usual.

“I don’t think that will work on her Lily. Come on, time to get you to work.” I shake my, grabbing her hand once more.

When we get to Poison Pen I ask Lily if she is sure she doesn’t need me to stay. Fiona went on leave because Miranda’s baby is due any day now.

“I’ve got Loki, besides everyone in this town knows if they mess with the shop, the MC boys will come down hard on them.” She says with a smile in my direction.
