I hugged the letter close to my chest as I fell back onto the pillow that still smelled wonderfully of Oliver. More tears streamed out from behind my closed eyes as I remembered what a glorious day we had yesterday.

We had started out with cuddling before we laughingly made our way downstairs to make pancakes and share breakfast with Grandma Margaret. Later in the afternoon, as we sat there watching the sunset, I had sensed a great happiness tinged with melancholy at the thought that this was all we had left.

As wonderful as it was, we were bound to say goodbye.

When we made love last night, it was different. It was like we both knew that we were going to be separated and we wanted to prolong the magic for as long as we could.

Oliver had always been a generous lover and he always made sure to bathe my senses in pleasure before taking his own.

It had always been clear to me that our time together was short. We were both pulled apart by our own responsibilities. He couldn’t abandon his patients and I could not leave Grandma Margaret behind on her own.

As much as I wanted that it didn’t have to be this way, the truth was always that we were loving each other on borrowed time and the most that we could do was simply make the best out of what was given to us.

It doesn’t make it any less painful, though,I thought to myself. But even then, I want to see him one last time. Even if it is to say goodbye…even if it will rip my soul apart, I would give anything for a chance to see Oliver again.

With a steely resolve, I stood up and dashed my tears off of my face. I rushed into the bathroom and cleaned up as best as I could in as little time as possible, throwing my hair into a messy bun before getting dressed in a soft, green summer dress.

When I hurried downstairs, I found Grandma Margaret in the living room with a sad look in her eyes. When she saw me dressed, she frowned.

“Where are you going off to so early, angel?” she asked me.

“I have to go somewhere but I’ll be back soon,” I said hurriedly, briefly pressing a kiss to her cheek. “If anything happens, you can call me. No, youmustcall me. Don’t forget your hearing aid. And stay close to the phone at all times!”

“What—?” she asked in confusion.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can,” I told her quickly. “Bye, Grandma!”

Buddy barked at me but I just scratched his head briefly before running out the door. He gave me a curious look with his head tilted back.

“Sorry, Buddy. I can’t play right now but I’ll be back!” I apologized hurriedly.

He let out a low whine and laid his head between his paws, looking up at me with soulful brown eyes.

“I promise I’ll play with you later,” I told him.

I dashed out of the house and slid into my car, quickly putting on my seatbelt as I pulled out of the driveway. I drove as fast as I can to the airport, pulling into an empty parking slot, before jumping out of the car.

I ran up to the airport and looked around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Oliver’s beloved features amongst the sea of faces around me.

“Excuse me,” I asked one of the comptrollers. “But do you know where the gate is for the nine o’clock flight to London?”

He looked at me strangely before pointing on a sign which said “Gates A1-A8” and answered, “Yes, Madam. Gate A3 in this direction please.”

I thanked him quickly and ran off. He probably thought I was insane or about to miss my flight.

It didn’t matter what he thought, though. All that mattered to me at that moment was getting to Oliver before his plane took him away from me for a long, long time.

I ran and didn’t even realize that I nearly passed the passport control counter as a gate stopped me and a man asked

“Excuse me, miss, but can I see your passport and boarding pass please?”

I blinked at the man in front of me. “Oh…I don’t have a passport or a boarding pass, but I just need to see somebody and say goodbye.”

“I’m sorry but I can’t let you in without a boarding pass,” he said firmly.

I looked at him desperately. “I’ll just be a moment. I just want to be able to say goodbye…”

“I’m sorry but I can’t do that,” he said. “Miss, you have to move to the side to let the other passengers pass.”
