We took Grandma to a craft store and got her the wool she wanted. There were a couple more misunderstandings, due to Grandma being unable to clearly hear us but in the end, we managed by pulling out different sorts of wool and handing them over to her for inspection.

She finally settled on a lovely, sea-green shade and we bought her several balls of it.

After all the excitement, we noticed that Grandma was a little tired so Oliver suggested we head back home so she could rest.

“Of course, I’m the best,” Grandma beamed. “Amanda thinks so, too.”

I nodded. “But Oliver meant that we should get home so you could rest, Grandma.”

“Oliver spent a boner for the best?”

“Bloody hell!” Oliver sputtered, looking around if anyone else heard what my grandmother just blurted out.

I burst out laughing and shook my head. “Let’s just all go home.”

“Ditto.”

The drive back home was punctuated with bursts of laughter as we tried to keep up a sane conversation with Grandma Margaret, in spite of the fact she could hardly hear us. It was all so hilarious that my belly was still aching from all that laughter when we pulled up to a stop in front of our home.

Oliver rushed to the back of the car but Grandma had already started to get off the car on her own, so I ran around to help her out and back into the house, supporting her as she hobbled.

I looked up at him and smiled mischievously. “Make sure you lock the wheels, okay?”

He laughed and winked at me. “Sure thing!”

“I think I should go for a nap,” Grandma declared. “These old bones can’t take as much excitement as they used to!”

We ambled into the house together as Oliver unloaded the wheelchair from the back. As we walked up the steps, I spotted the hearing aid sitting on top of the coffee table on the veranda and shook my head. What might have been a bit of a nuisance with Grandma leaving her hearing aid behind turned out into fun and crazy afternoon with Oliver.

It’s not really what happens, it’s who you spend it with,I realized. With Oliver, he could turn the most embarrassing situations into absolutely fun ones. I wouldn’t change a thing today!

I got Grandma her hearing aid and helped her into her bedroom. As soon as we came in through the door, Buddy was on us, greeting us with excited barks and a wagging tail. He took one look at Grandma’s stooped back and he nudged her into the direction of her bedroom.

Dogs are really perceptive creatures. They care a lot for the humans they love.

After I had tucked Grandma into her bed, I found Oliver closing the door behind him, the wheelchair parked discreetly in the corner. He held up the bag with all the food from the restaurant.

“Where should I put these?” he asked me.

I smiled at him and took the bag. “Let me take care of it.”

Instead of just staying there in the living room with Buddy, he followed me into the kitchen as I took out the food containers and placed them in the refrigerator so they wouldn’t spoil.

“By the way,” I spoke softly. “Thank you for this afternoon. I had a great time today with you and Grandma.”

He crossed his arms across his broad chest and raised an eyebrow at me. “Shouldn’t I be thanking you? After all, you were the ones who invited me to join your little excursion.”

I smiled at him. “Do you think you can stay for a while longer? I really like it when you’re around.”

He shook his head and a sad look crossed his eyes. “You know we can’t do that, Amanda. It would only complicate things and you know that I still have to leave for London.”

“I know,” I said softly, dropping my eyes to the floor. “But right now, I really don’t care. Let’s just enjoy the time we have left together and not think about the future for a while.”

I took a bottle of sparkling wine and grinned up at him. “See? I even have some sparkling wine for the occasion. Let me just pop it into the refrigerator to chill it for a bit…”

I turned to put the wine into the refrigerator when I felt him lean into me from behind. I froze, feeling his warm breath fanning over the sensitive skin of my nape.

“I know this scent,” he murmured. “Are you still wearing it?”
