AMANDA

Iclosed my eyes as I laid down on the sofa, Buddy following right after me. After washing up, I tried to eat the batch of pancakes Oliver made before he left, but I had no appetite for it, so I threw them in the trash.

What a pity.

Buddy looked at me, irritated. “I would love to give you some Bud, but they have chocolate, and that’s very unhealthy for dogs,” I took a dog cookie out of a drawer and gave it to Buddy as compensation.

I made myself some coffee and forced myself to swallow it down, hoping it would alleviate the pounding in my head.

I turned my head to the side. Oliver’s phone still sat on the coffee table on top of a couple of magazines. He probably was yet to realize that he had left it here in my house.

I smiled to myself as I ran a hand down the gadget. It was pretty plain with, just a simple cover to protect it from the daily grind. I noticed that it was even scratched in some places as if he couldn’t be bothered to handle it more carefully.

For Oliver, it probably didn’t matter what it looked like as long as it did its job.

On the contrary, Dan always had to have the latest iPhone and the latest gadgets, flashing them whenever he could.

I sighed and closed my eyes, stroking Buddy’s furry head, which was laid across my stomach. Now that I had seen Dan for what he truly was, I wanted to kick myself for being so blind. My friends had always been a little uncomfortable around him. Even Grandma Margaret didn’t like him.

And I just thought that he was always so cold and aloof… that he only opened up to me because he loved me.

I wanted to kick myself for being so stupid. Apparently, Dan only loved himself and the attention he got from me. He was most probably a narcissistic bastard and I hoped I would never see him again.

My eyes flew open when the doorbell suddenly rang.

It must be Oliver, here to get his phone,I thought miserably.

Buddy leapt off the sofa and I padded after him with the phone, feeling less human with each step. My heart stuttered in my chest for a moment as I paused to answer the door, when I heard Buddy growl in warning.

I frowned. “Where is this newfound loyalty coming from, Bud?”

I inched the door open and felt the strong urge to slam it back closed when Dan’s ugly mug sprang into view. I was nursing a hangover, and I had just sent away the kindest man to ever walk into my life because I was a broken mess. He was the last thing I needed to see right now.

In fact, I would count it a blessed life if I never set eyes on him again!

I moved to close the door but he had a foot stuck in through the gap. I growled in frustration and tried to force him out, but he had slithered in like the awful snake that he was.

“What are you doing here, Dan?” I asked him with no amount of anger in my voice. “In case you aren’t aware of it yet, you’re no longer welcome here!”

He smiled at me in a way that sent shivers skittering down my spine—and not in a good way.

“I just wanted to talk to you, Amanda,” he said silkily.

“Well, I don’t want to talk to you!” I bit out furiously, backing away from him. “Get out!”

Beside me, Buddy was growling and barking menacingly, his teeth bared. His whole body vibrated in anger, his jaws snapping in the air as if to demonstrate to Dan just what he intended to do if he didn’t get the message.

“Take this stupid dog away from me!” he yelled, pushing his way inside and grabbing my arm.

I yelped in protest. “You’re hurting me!”

Beside me, Buddy was barking nonstop, adding to the cacophony. I hoped the neighbors would hear and finally get Dan off. There was something in his eyes that was absolutely psychotic, like he had taken leave of his senses as he bore down on me.

I felt fear slither down my spine.

Suddenly, I felt the weight being lifted off of me as I saw Oliver ruthlessly yank Dan off of me. I felt relief wash over me in an instant.

He came! Oliver came back!
