Maybe Kendall was doing me a favor by freezing me out. It was probably for the best that this ended before I did something stupid: like fall in love with him.

I picked at the salad, not hungry, and not finding any enjoyment in it.

I was just thinking about taking another swim when my phone rang.

Another unknown number, different than the one that Lauren had used last time, but the sinking feeling in my gut told me it was her.

I swiped it and answered roughly, “What?”

There was a pause and then a breathy voice I knew so well. “Deacon…”

“Lauren, I told you that any communication needs to go through our lawyers.”

“Screw the lawyers. They’re working against us, don’t you see?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I have something important to tell you,” she said. “And I have something you need to see, but it needs to be face-to-face.”

Rolling my eyes, I glanced out the window to the endless blue sea. “That isn’t going to happen.”

Her voice hardened. “Yes, it is. Stop playing games with me. Where are you?”

I hung up.

She immediately called back, and I let it ring to voicemail. She didn’t call back again.

Two hours later, fresh from an exhausting, though unsatisfying swim in the pool, I felt emotionally strong enough to see what Lauren wanted.

The voicemail she’d left was twenty seconds of silence. I let out a sigh of relief. She could be as stubborn as a mule, and never liked being told ‘No’. Maybe she was finally getting the message.

But, more interestingly, my lawyer, Bob, had called and left a message asking for me to call him back as soon as I could. The voicemail was marked as ‘Urgent.’

Uh-oh, that was either very good or very bad news.

Dread settling cold in my stomach, I called his office. As soon as I gave my name, his assistant put me right through.

“Deacon,” Bob said. He sounded exhausted. “I’m glad I was able to reach you.”

“Sorry I didn’t pick up when you called.” A pause. “What’s up, Bob?”

The lawyer let out a heavy sigh. “Lauren called my office with a demand for a face-to-face meeting—”

I sighed and scratched my forehead. “Yes, she somehow found my new cell phone number and has been doing the same. Tell her lawyer to tell her I’m not interested in a meeting.”

“I know. And I left instructions for my staff to say the same,” he said. Then there was another small pause. “Unfortunately, Lauren did not take no for an answer.”

I froze. “What happened?”

“She called back later in the day under a different phone number. This time, she claimed that she was your personal assistant.”

I felt a brand-new chill go down my spine. “That’s… that has to be illegal, right?”

Bob made a low sound under his breath that wasn’t a yes or a no. “I will definitely be including her actions in a separate filing to the judge. But at this point, there is no active restraining order, and you technically are still married, though separated.”

“So, she can just call in and falsify anything she wants?”
