“That is assuming,” Bob said with emphasis, just to prove me wrong, “as long as nothing ugly in your past comes to light.”

I let out a sigh and sank down on the pretty mattress. It had a good bounce to it. It was easier to focus on that than on old anger. “You know me. I’m an open book. Plus, I’m the wronged party here.”

“True, which is why I think this settlement is a fair one. Considering.”

Considering her infidelity.

Bob was too much of a professional to say it, but the words hung in the air, unspoken.

My fingers tightened on the phone. “Nothing is going to come to light. I just want to get this over and done with. I want to move on.”

I want to be free of her, I added to myself.

“That’s good to hear,” Bob said. “Considering you have no children, and your financial assets were fairly one-sided, I anticipate this will be over with as quickly as it can be.” I heard the shuffling of papers in the background as if he were closing an old-school file. He didn’t do much digitally. That was probably why he had called instead of emailed. “But from what Lauren’s attorney has said—or specifically, not said—she may be willing to play hardball for more funds.”

“Let her,” I said flatly.

Soon the worst would be over with. Then I would be free.

I hung up a few minutes later feeling more unsettled than before, and a little dirty on the inside. As if just speaking of my soon-to-be-ex-wife had left soot on my soul.

The private lap pool out front was calling my name.

Decision made, I quickly changed into swimming shorts and decided to test it out.

The saltwater pool was, again, everything that the resort had promised. I stuck to simple laps back and forth, cutting through the water with an emphasis on speed over form. Maybe if I tired myself out, I could get a good night’s sleep.

I lost myself in the exercise and came up in time to see my relaxation consultant, Kendall, arrive, a stack of fresh towels in one hand. He bent to lay a big fluffy towel out over one of the deck chairs for my use. Again, my gaze was drawn to his ass before I looked away.

I tried to ignore him—I was used to having staff around

Damn, that man made a pair of uniformed khakis look good.

The thought flitted in and out of my brain and I mentally shook myself to get my mind back on track. Maybe I was more jet-lagged than I thought.

I completed one last lap and then hoisted myself out of the pool.

I felt Kendall’s gaze on me, and when I turned back to him, he was handing over a warm towel.

“Is there anything I can do for you?” he asked, looking up at me. In the bright glare of the sun, his eyes were a lovely shade of green. “A drink, maybe? We do have a full bar.”

“You can mix drinks, too?” I asked as I toweled off.

“Sure can. My Long Island Iced Teas are nearly as mean as my massages.” His lips had a devilish curve to them, and I decided at that moment I was going to have to put his claim to the test on both counts.

I rubbed the towel over my head. “A Long Island Iced Tea sounds great right now, light on the Long Island, if you don’t mind. I want to save some room for dinner.”

“Of course.” He nodded crisply. “Speaking of dinner, do you have anything in mind? We have a menu on our in-house tablet, or our staff can whip something up to order.”

Bringing the towel down, I looked at him. Yes, Kendall was customer service friendly but there was something else behind his gaze as if most of his words had a double meaning. I hesitated for a second and then mentally shrugged. Oh, why the hell not.

“I’ll have whatever you’re having.”

His visible surprise gave me a brief flash of pleasure.

“I hope you don’t mean that you want to eat in the employee chow hall,” he said dryly.

I chuckled. “All the more reason to have a meal with me.”
