“My mother’s perfect little world just got messed up.” Of course, she wasn’t talking about the dumb piece of lawn. No more than two feet of the grass had been turned over, but it was enough that her mother would pitch a fit when she saw it.

“I’m not that sorry about it.” She squeezed his hand and looked at him. “She never stops to think about my feelings. Why should I stop and think about hers?”

Brick lifted her hand and kissed the top of it. “Because you’re better than that. Because you’re nothing like her.”

“Are we making a mistake leaving?” Was that what he was insinuating? That they were hurting her mother in return by leaving the party without saying good-bye to anyone? That they shouldn’t hurt her like that?

His eyes narrowed. Then, with his free hand, he wrapped it around her neck and pulled her closer. His lips met hers with an intense frenzy. Part anger, part hurt.

“Don’t say the word mistake. Ever.”

Okay. Her words had bothered him more than she had thought. But why?

“Brick…” She didn’t know how to ask him what he was thinking.

“Last week when we…we had our first little spat,” –he grinned, although she could see the agony swimming in his eyes— “you suggested that this was a mistake.” He squeezed her hand to indicate she meant them. That they were a mistake.

“If you think that, fine. But it’s the best damn mistake I’ve ever made in my life.”

“Oh, Brick.” She kissed him, hard and quick. “I didn’t mean it. I regretted it as soon as I said it. I’m sorry.”

His hand around her neck tightened as his smile turned into a real one. “Leaving isn’t a mistake either. You shouldn’t have to be around someone who makes you feel horrible inside.”

“What would I do without you?” She couldn’t imagine her life without him.

“You’ll never have to find out.”

Something she loved to hear.

“How much did she offer you?”

“Does it matter?”

She shrugged. “No, not really. Just curious how much I am worth in her eyes.”

“There’s nothing in this world that would convince me to leave you. Nothing.”

He wasn’t going to tell her, and she decided it was for the best. Did she really want to know? It would only increase the pain expanding inside at what her mother had done.

“Let’s go home. There’s lots of unpacking to finish.”

He kissed her one more time before letting her go and putting the truck in drive. “Can you do it naked? I’d find that much more enjoyable watching you unpack.”

She sent him a sly smile. “Only if you help me.” Her mouth curved up into a sultry smile. “Naked, of course.”

“Anything for you.”

Jezebelle realized he meant what he said. He’d do anything for her.

She was one lucky woman.
