Page 56 of The Right Time

Hopefully. He just couldn’t help himself. Not when every time he looked at her he couldn’t control himself and how beautiful she was.

When she came out of the bathroom, although she had put her outfit back to rights and fixed her hair, he could still see the telltale signs that she had been loved thoroughly. Good. It would let everyone know she was taken.

She was his.

He used the bathroom himself, then followed her out the door.

“Have a good day at work. See you for lunch.”

They kissed like it was the last time they’d see each other and then parted ways. Mia headed for the subway station, while he decided to knock his first person off the guest list.

Champ Holloway.

Bastard extraordinaire.

He couldn’t have Gabby inviting him to the party because he wouldn’t know it was also for her. And he couldn’t have Dane ask his brother since the party was also for him. There was no way in hell Mia would ask, so that left it to him.

He decided to try Champ’s apartment first. He’d been there one time before—when Mia had to go over there and get her stuff when they broke up. He hated the guy then, and he still hated him. The doorman surprised him when he said Champ wasn’t home, but he’d be at his office. No, it didn’t surprise him the doorman told him where to find Champ because he flashed his badge. Hey, it came in handy sometimes and what was it to him for the guy to think something nefarious was going on with Champ. He was an asshole. He deserved it.

What surprised him was to hear he’d find him at work. Champ didn’t know the meaning of work. At least, he didn’t when Dane worked at the same company. Champ was finding out how much Dane did when he had worked for the family business.

It didn’t take him long to get to his destination. The security guard didn’t give him any problems either about going up to Champ’s floor. Again, he flashed his badge. He thought about knocking when he didn’t see a secretary at the desk to announce his arrival, but it didn’t take long to come to the conclusion he wasn’t that nice. Not to an asshole like Champ.

The door swung open. Champ looked up from his desk, his eyes flashing irritation.

“What the hell do you want? How about you knock?”

Jaxson rapped his knuckles on the door and grinned. Not a very friendly one, but neither was the look Champ was sporting.

“Where’s your secretary?”

Not that he actually cared. But that’s what ruined his relationship with Mia. He had gone and screwed his secretary right here in his office. Like a colossal idiot. Because what kind of idiot would do anything to ruin the beautiful thing with Mia?

“Can I help you with something?”

Champ stood up. His clothes, oddly enough, looked wrinkled, like he had slept in them. The last time Jaxson had seen him, he had been immaculate. From his smooth hairstyle right down to his shiny, expensive shoes. Not a thing out of place.

His hair today looked decent. A bit rumbled and flying in different directions, but his clothes gave him a sense of disorder.

“Your brother’s birthday is coming up.”

“Yeah, I know. He’s my brother.”

Jaxson decided to ignore the sarcasm. Honestly, even though he was acting like a jerk himself, he didn’t want to get into it with Champ. He simply wanted to get in and out and continue the rest of the invites before it was time to meet up with Mia.

“We’re throwing him and Gabby a birthday party next Saturday. Gabby’s birthday is two weeks after his. We thought it’d be fun to throw them a party together. I don’t want to invite you, but since Dane is your brother, I am.”

Champ cocked a brow. “We?”

He forced himself to remain calm and at ease, even though this conversation could turn into dangerous territory real fast.

“Me and Mia. We’re planning it. Next Saturday at The Corner Bar. It starts at 8. Be there or don’t. I don’t care. It’s a secret, though, so don’t go spilling it to anyone, especially Dane.” Jaxson paused, ignoring the fact Champ’s jaw was clenching and unclenching as if he hadn’t liked the first part of his answer. “I’m sure Dane would like to see you there.”

Maybe. Gabby had said they were getting along better than before.

But if it was up to him, this guy wouldn’t be anywhere near Mia for any reason.

“How is Mia?”
