“So, if I said that I was dabbling a bit with making…making a wedding dress for Gabby, you wouldn’t think it silly.”

Risking a look, afraid she would still slip away from his embrace, he glanced at the sketch. “If that drawing was meant for Gabby, I know for a fact she’d love it, and whatever you created would be beautiful. Because you’re beautiful and smart, and I repeat,” his mouth inched closer to hers, “you can do anything you put your mind to.”

“Jaxson…” His name said so softly and with regret told him she wanted to escape from his arms. But the passion in her eyes said otherwise.

So, he did what he should’ve done months ago.

He closed the distance and kissed her.

His lips were like tasting a slice of decadent cake—light and airy, yet sweet and oh so delicious. He didn’t pressure her and take control; he let her set the pace. Which made it that much harder to pull away.

“You shouldn’t have done that.” She couldn’t even look him in the eyes as she said it.

“Because you don’t like it?” He breathed deeply. “Or because you do?”

Her eyes gradually lifted.

Perhaps her erratic emotions flashed like a series of images for him to process in the blink of an eye, because his expression was a myriad of emotions as he deciphered each one of hers.

She was so confused.

On one hand, she wanted to fling her worries away and let him inside her heart. Tell him she loved him as much as he loved her.

On the other hand, she wanted to keep pushing him away because she knew it would never work out in the end.

Because nothing in her life ever worked out. Not since the day her mother died when she was sixteen. She knew then life would always play cruel jokes on her. She had begged and prayed and swore on her very soul she’d do whatever she had to if her mother would only beat the cancer.

But she didn’t.

From there, life threw her one curveball after another.

So, why enjoy even a minute of pleasure and happiness with Jaxson when it would eventually be ripped away from her?

“I know you always hold back, Mia. What are you so afraid of?” His hand swept up and caressed her cheek.

She didn’t like how he seemed to look right through her into the deep recesses of her heart. Averting his gaze, she shrugged. “It wouldn’t last. Why ruin our friendship?”

“I told myself the same thing over and over, which is why I never wanted you to find out how I felt about you. But then you did and…”

“And it ruined it.”

“Because you won’t even give it a chance.”

His harsh tone had her shifting her gaze up. His eyes reflected anger with a mixture of agony.

“I don’t want to argue with you.” His hands tightened on her back. She loved and hated the gesture. “And I don’t want to let go of you.”

“I wish you wouldn’t say things like that.”

“Why? Because you don’t like it?” His lips curled into a grin. A sexy, devious grin that made her heart skip a beat and her insides twirl with anticipation. “Or because you do?”

That was one thing she loved about Jaxson. He could always make her laugh, especially when she didn’t want to.

A short laugh slipped out. “Because I like it and I shouldn’t.”

Wow. Where was all this bravery coming from? She was never this honest and outspoken. Keeping her words to herself was always the safer option.
