“We came up with a plan and the Russians agreed to help us for the price of everything that was in the tomb which would become Anna’s solely if the man she was arranged to marry, Ariti, died.

“The Russians helped to have my name changed so that I was the bride that was to… that he was supposed to marry. They gave me a capsule.” She touched the locket. “It’s been in here the whole time. All I had to do was slip it into his drink… Killing him is a price I was willing to take just so my family could live in peace.

“Anna couldn’t refuse to marry him. It doesn’t work that way. He would have hunted us down if he knew we were anything other than congenial. I had to marry him because I was the only one strong enough to kill him. All I wanted was to do this final thing. This one thing that had hung over our heads. I don’t want to have anything to do with the mafia. Anna and Uncle Matteo feel the same. I want to live a normal life. I want to live the kind of life my mother wanted me to live. The life she died trying to give me. One where I’m not morally bankrupt through the association of my family.”

.The silence deafened her.

“Now that you know everything, I guess I don’t have to be here anymore. You have my cousin. I failed to protect her and I don’t think begging you not to hurt her will make any difference. I know all you want is to avenge the man who threatened your family.”

Hurt didn’t quite cover it. He was going to marry Anna. He already had her. And she had done the stupidest thing on earth.

She had fallen for her enemy.

She walked past him. He wasn’t going to stop her. Why would he? She was no one.

Determined to leave with some of her pride, she knew she had a limited time before she started crying and never stopped.

As she passed him by, his cologne caught on the air. Why had she allowed that to happen?

Fuck.

“What’s your name?” Elliot asked. He had grabbed her arm and hauled her back to face him.

“No. I’m going to leave with my name and what’s left of my pride.” She gave one hard yank and thought it would be enough to be released. It wasn’t.

“What’s your name?”

“What does it matter to you? You’re still going to get what you want. If you want to know my name, you can find that out in a heartbeat. Now unhand me, Elliot. There’s no reason for you to keep me here.”

“I want to hear your name from your own lips.”

“No.”

She had somehow attached her real name to her pride and currently, only her pride kept her heart from disintegrating into nothing.

Chapter Sixteen

If she had a dollar for every time she asked Elliot to let her go…

“You can’t keep me here anymore, Elliot. You know that. I’m not what you wanted. My name doesn’t matter.”

“Why can’t you just do as you’re told,” he grumbled. Vivian was taken by such surprise that he was touching her, that she forgot to react.

He picked her up and carried her to the table. He spun her around until she was leaning over it.

“Stop this,” she said, unaccustomed to the calmness in her voice. In an attempt at self-preservation, she had emptied out every emotion inside her. She was dead. Non-existent. It was the only way she was going to live out the rest of her days.

“Are you punishing me for lying to you? Is this what it's about?”

He dragged her zipper down the length of her dress, parting the fabric and shoving it off her body. She didn’t fight him.

He yanked off her panties. Her bra came off next. Then he made her lean further down onto her table, her back arched.

He had unearthed his cock and now his tremendous thickness slid into her folds. She staggered forward as he weighed her down with the heaviness of his shaft. She was so wet, she wanted to cry but sucked up her tears.

It was only when she felt the soaked head of his cock nudge her asshole that she froze up.

“Elliot, no. Stop.”
