"Right," he said, his voice hollow as he spoke. "As your Hatchling."

“No, as someone I’ve promised I’d stop being so selfish with. We are forever going to be tied together by the Cantil, but I made the choice to want to be with you. You’re special to me, Caspar.”

"Now," she said, crossing her arms in front of her. "Are you going to explain how the hell you ended up in this predicament? I don’t see your car here."

"Just an old coworker," he murmured. "He took off a little while ago. Said that something important came up."

"Who hit you? Were you hiding from them?" she questioned.

He opened his mouth to answer, but he was cut off by a door being slammed down the hallway. The China cabinet rattled just outside Caspar’s door as the house shook.

"Get in here!" he hissed, pulling on her arm. She wasn't expecting him to grab her, so she couldn't stop herself from bumping into him when he suddenly stopped just inside the room. His balance was already thrown off without his crutches, and with all his weight on his good foot, her weight flung into his chest resulted in them toppling onto his bed.

He let out a groan, and she quickly started to scramble to get off him. However, it was too late before his bedroom door was pushed open. A blonde woman stood in the doorway with an angry expression on her face. Her eyes seemed unfocused as her gaze bounced around the room but landed on the boy on the bed.

"What‘er you still doin' here?" She slurred. "I thought 'cha lazy ass left."

"Who is she?" Mykie asked, unimpressed.

"Oh, so you take afta’ your father, don't 'cha?" She stumbled into Caspar's room. "Bringin’ your whores home under my roof. Flaunting ‘em in front of me… Just like your father."

"Mom, Mykie's not a whore," Caspar said in a tight voice.

His mother snorted. "I bet all the rent money has been goin’ to payin’ her. Isn't it?" she spat, and Mykie could see the spit physically fly from her mouth. "You don’t even care ‘bout your own motha’. You're worthless. Absolutely worthless. Just like your father. You men are all the same.”

"He's worth more than you are," Mykie snapped. She stepped in front of Caspar, not shielding him much but it made his mother focus on her instead of him. "He’ll be leaving now to prevent any more abuse."

"Mykie," Caspar breathed.

"He's...he's my son." His mother stumbled over her words. "I can do whatever I fuckin' want as his motha'. That's my right for raisin' his ungrateful ass."

"He might be your son, but he's not a child anymore. He's in his twenties, and he's coming with me. If you weren’t his mother, I wouldn’t hesitate to kill you for putting your hands on him," Mykie bit out through clenched teeth.

"Stay away from my son, youslut! I know what your kind does. They steal all the men from hard-workin’ women and all their money."

Mykie wasn't expecting the woman to come at her or start swinging her fists. Luckily, she reacted fast and grabbed the woman by her forearms, pushing her against the wooden closet that was on the wall beside the door.

"First, I probably do more in a day than you do in a work week, and I make my own money, thank you very much. Second, I think you're the one that needs to stay away from Caspar. You laid your hands on him, so I think you should see how it feels," she whispered with a sadistic smile.

She brought her fists back and hit her in the nose. She ignored the woman's cries of pain. She was sure that the mother didn't listen to her son’s pleas to stop and for mercy, so why should she?

Every plea for her to stop made her fists fly faster and harder into the woman. She let all of her anger out on the woman.

Her anger at the Vultures and the Zack.

At Renly and Caspar's mother.

At herself.

She brought her hand back once again, but something caught her arm. She looked over her shoulder and met Caspar's eye.

"Please don't," he whispered.

"She hurt you," she reasoned. "No one should get away with hurting you."

"She's still my mom. Please," he pleaded.

Mykie sighed. She understood what he was saying, even if she didn't like it. "Grab everything you want to take with you, and we will leave. Take everything you want to keep because I don't want you to ever come back here."
