Page 17 of Losing Control

“You don’t look the type to sacrifice for someone who you haven’t known long. Even then, that person must be special to you.”

“I’d die for any of those boys. I’d do anything I could to stop them from being hurt. I’d do the same for you.”

Blaine's expression shifted. "For me?"

She wouldn't have believed Blaine could be knocked off guard until she was standing there.

“Sure,” she said with a light shrug. “You’re my bed buddy. I wouldn’t do that lightly. When I’m sober, at least.”

He smirked, but she could see that his eyes didn’t match his smile. He appeared…almost disappointed by her words.

“Right,” he said, clearing his throat. “I better get back to the table, if you’re all right to walk now?”

She nodded. “Yeah, thanks.”

They stood there for a moment, each seeming to have something to say to the other. Instead, Blaine nodded again, stiffer this time, before turning to head back to the table.

Before she could stop herself, Mykie reached forward and grabbed Blaine’s wrist, stopping him.

“Wait!” she shouted before she closed her eyes and took a deep breath in an attempt to calm her beating heart.

Blaine didn’t say a word as he watched her collect herself.

“I don’t understand what I did to make you hate me so much. I’m close with the Cantil, but I genuinely care about your friends. Maybe one day, you’ll see that for yourself,” she said.

“I don’t hate you, Mykie.”

She opened her eyes and leveled her gaze on his face. He had moved closer again, blocking her view from the table with his friends and physically blocking her from moving forward.

“I don’t know if I believe that. No matter what you say, I hope I can earn your trust enough for me to believe you.”

She dropped his wrist and stepped back from him. “Let the others know that I’m sorry, but I have business to take care of.”

“Cantil business?” Blaine asked. “Does it have to do with that guy?”

Mykie sighed and crossed her arms. “Possibly. I won’t know for sure until I speak to someone important. I was told that my boss was out of the building, so after my promotion recently, I’m in charge of making sure everything is running smoothly, while he’s gone.”

It sounded like a lie, even to her ears. It was a white lie, but a lie all the same.

Blaine didn’t look convinced as he crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Interesting.”

“What?” she said. What was interesting about what she said?

“I said, If you think so. I guess I’ll leave you to that, then.”

He turned around and began to head back to the table for the second time.

“Blaine,” she called out. “I have one more question.”

He turned and looked at her with a lifted eyebrow.

"If given the chance, would you have really exposed me after seeing my tattoo?"

He was silent for a moment as he considered her words. Mykie considered them, as well. Was a tattoo enough proof of being Cantil? With more consideration, she would realize that her fear wasn't the exposure of her secret, but instead, the exposure that she wasn't as trustworthy as Corbus or Renly thought she was. That their relationship was built on lies without them knowing who she really was.

“I guess we’ll both never know.”

She watched his retreating figure as he joined his friends again.
