Knowing the answer didn’t make any of the time we’d lost more palatable, but I was slightly consoled knowing this must have been the right time for us.

Thayle had told me to just go in, and so I did, walking into her house. I’d really have to talk to her about locking her doors.

At the moment, she was next door with Rich, a man I owed a debt of gratitude to. I wouldn’t say he saved her. Thayle had saved herself. But his presence in her life, and even that of his gossip-loving wife who started trouble from time to time in Kitchi Falls, had certainly helped matters.

I’d been to Thayle’s house before, but never after spending half the day drinking some of the best wine at Grado after an influential wine critic had just left. Or, most importantly, as Thayle’s boyfriend.

She’d said the word more than once that afternoon, and every time, I found myself smiling despite Marco’s teasing looks. I liked how it sounded, and would like hearing “fiancé” or “husband” even more. There was no doubt in my mind she was the last woman I’d ever touch.

“Sorry about that.” She crashed through the front door, closing it behind her. “Thanks for coming up here. I was thinking maybe we could head downtown for dinner...” She trailed off, likely because of the look in my eye. “You don’t want dinner?”

“At the moment, no.”

“I think I know what it is that you want.”

She backed up, as if to get away from me. Not a chance. Not tonight. Not ever. But Thayle clearly had a plan of her own. She backed up right into her bedroom. Flicking on a lamp, I looked around. I’d seen her room before, though not in years.

“It looks different,” I said as the back of Thayle’s knees hit the bed.

“You haven’t been here in a while,” she said, reaching down to remove first one shoe and then the second. I did the same.

“I hope to be seeing a lot more of it.”

Thayle didn’t stop with her shoes. Watching me the whole time, she tore off her sweater, and then her jeans. I mirrored each of her movements with my own.

“As you live with your brother, I’m thinking you will.”

An inconvenient fact that would have to be remedied somehow. “We’ll have to fix that. We need a place to rendezvous on the estate.”

She pulled off her bra, and just like that, we were both completely nude. When Thayle reached to remove her hat, realizing she still wore it, I stopped her.

“I like it,” I said, unfurling the condom in my hand and not wasting a second.

Thayle climbed onto the bed. I swore aloud. The sight of her, waiting for me, legs spread, with that fucking adorable hat on her head...

“Come here,” I said, pulling her to me.

This wouldn’t be long and drawn-out. After our fight this morning, and everything that had happened since, I wanted to be inside her too much. Wanted to be close to her, to reassure her this was only the start for us.

“I love you so much,” I said as I entered her. Thayle’s hands flew to my arms as I wrapped her legs around me.

“You are the most incredible—” I pumped into her, reaching between us with my thumb, “—most intelligent...”

She whimpered.

“. . . most beautiful woman in—” I paused, rubbing my thumb against her as she squirmed, “—all of Kitchi Falls.”

Though she laughed, it didn’t last long. I knew what Thayle liked by now and circled my hips in response. Her smile faded and her mouth widened as she kept pace, her hips lifting to meet me. “Neo,” she moaned, “yes. Please.”

Thayle would never have to ask twice. With a final few thrusts, we both cried out, her hat popping off as I covered her with my body, kissing her as I’d wanted to do since the second she walked into the house.

Eventually I moved to the side so as not to crush her. Reluctantly, I left the bed and cleaned up, and then I plopped back down and cradled her at my side.

“I meant to say earlier, I love you too,” she said. And then a second later, “but I am hungry.”

I laughed. Of course she was.

I looked down at Thayle, taking in her smile. Her expression reminded me of something. She had that same shit-eating grin as when...
