And there he was, watching me. If I had an extra swing in my step, there was a good reason for it.

“So how did it go?”

“I thought you said no more work on this trip.” I sat at a picnic table on the bench across from him. Neo already had our sandwiches unwrapped, two glasses of wine between us.

He smiled and picked up his glass. “I did. A toast to that.”

Our glasses clinked. I’d tasted the cab when we first got here. It was probably my favorite wine on the trip so far despite my love of whites.

“So if we’re not going to talk about work...” he hedged, picking up his grilled chicken sandwich.

“I think instead...” I stalled, drumming up enough courage. Then I thought of what he’d whispered in my ear and went for it. “Another round of truth or dare is in order.”

“I’m game,” he said, taking a bite of his sandwich. I did the same, praying this went how I was planning.

“Awesome. You first. What’ll it be?”

“Truth.”

“Something I don’t already know,” I reminded him.

He continued eating, either thinking or pretending to think. I knew exactly what I would say on my turn.

“I’ve got it.”

Peeking at him over my wine glass, I braced for it.

“You don’t know that I know...” He paused, watching me. “You don’t wear underwear.”

I nearly spit out my wine. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

I had indeed. “Where in the world did you hear that from?”

“You.”

“No way. I’d never have told you that.” It was the exact kind of inappropriate thing I saved for my friends, or boyfriends, or pretty much anyone other than Neo.

“You did, two nights ago. After the, um, courtyard party at Mirabeau.”

Courtyard party. Which occured after the cake exchange. “When you put me to bed?”

“You got it.” He smiled. “You told me you didn’t need fresh underwear because you don’t wear them.”

Oh geez. So classy. At least I waited until after he showed some interest in me before revealing that particular truth.

“You got me on that one. I honestly don’t remember telling you that.”

He didn’t hesitate. “Is it true?”

“Do you want that to be my truth?”

“Hmmm. So you’re choosing truth too?”

“I am.”

His gaze moved downward, as if he could see anything through the table, then back up at me. “No.”
