“Um, Tris?”

Chari’s brother grabs my arm just as I finally make a move.

“What’s up, Dev?”

He looks from me to the mystery woman.

“I just wanted to be sure you know . . . I mean, it looks like you’re making a beeline toward Evie.”

Evie. Perfect name for her. Not one you hear very often, though.

“You know her?”

Devon Atwood can be a son of a bitch when he wants. Enzo’s oldest friend is pretty accustomed to taking my brother’s side when we bicker. Which is a lot, admittedly.

But he’s a great guy. Though there’s no chance in hell he’s going to tell me why he’s grinning like a loon.

“Yeah, I know her. She’s one of Chari’s only friends from high school who she still sees on a regular basis. How do you not know her?”

Evie is hugging Papa Donovan.

“She’s from Bridgewater?”

Devon is definitely up to something.

“Yeah. She is. Has been pretty much gone since she graduated high school, though.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” I ask Enzo’s friend.

Devon laughs out loud, attracting attention, of course. I swear sometimes I don’t know who’s worse, he or Gian. Both of them love to be in the center of everything.

“Nothing, man. I just . . .” He clears his throat. “You have good timing. She and her boyfriend just broke up.”

I look at Devon, trying to figure out his angle. “Interesting.”

“They dated for a long time too.”

If she moved right out of college, that would explain why I’ve never seen her before. Plus, if she went to school with Chari, that would make her around twenty-eight, twenty-nine.

“She’s hot,” Devon says. “No doubt about that.”

I give him a look. Not just any look.

Thelook.

“There’s just one little thing,” Devon hedges, hopefully getting the message. Stay away.

I’m surprised neither he nor Gian have already moved in on her. A single woman who looks like that, in Bridgewater?

“What little thing?”

I knew there was something. Devon’s been looking like the cat that ate the canary this entire conversation.

“Devon,” a female voice calls. We look into the crowd. Chari. “Dev, we need you for a sec.”

“Brother duty. Catch you later.”

The bastard walks off without another word.
