“If you’re into cocky ex-Navy men, that is.”

I can’t help but laugh. He was so close to passing with flying colors. “Isn’t every girl?”

“Into cocky ex-Navy men? Yeah, I guess so.”

“Add the fact that he handled explosives . . . it’s a downright heady combination. He was Special Forces or something like that, right?”

Tris’s eyes narrow. “An EOD tech. But maybe we should stop talking about Brax.”

“What would you like to talk about?”

“You first.”

Fair enough. I did come here, after all.

With the faint sound of a boat horn in the distance, the relaxed atmosphere of the lake to my left, trees all around us, and the hottest guy in the history of mankind sitting across from me, I can almost forget the rest of it for a bit.

My dad.

Insomnia.

Worry that I’m mishandling my father’s legacy. And my mother’s too.

Not today.

This night is for possibilities, not stark realities.

“Last night,” I start, and stop. Where to begin? “Scratch that. This whole charade . . .”

It’s his eyes. That’s my favorite feature. Always so intense, and interested. Not once has Tris ever looked anywhere but me when I was talking.

“I just thought we should talk about it.”

“Agreed.”

Shit. Do I really have to be the one to go first? What if he’s fine with our current arrangement? Whatever the hell that is.

“In theory, a few public appearances to stoke the PR fires seems like a good idea.”

“But . . . ?”

“But I’m not sure that it is.”

I don’t want to be with you for PR. I want your phone number. I want you to kiss me when you see me. I want to go on a date. A real one.

I want to have mad, passionate sex with you, sooner rather than later.

“I see.”

Fricking say it, Evie.

I am such a chickenshit.

“Hey, I’m heading out. Want me to lock up the front?”

All I see is Brax’s head as he pops it out the door leading to the patio.

“Yeah, thanks, Brax.”
