I nearly choke on my wine. Leave it to Lus not to be subtle.

“We haven’t been dating all that long. One step at a time.”

Lusanne rolls her eyes. “Whatever. I already know the answer.”

“Oh, do you now?”

“Yes, I do. The two of you will totally get hitched. Which is kinda funny. All these single DeLuca men running around and then bam! Two of them married.”

“We’re not even engaged. Yet.”

Lusanne lights up like a Christmas tree.

“I knew it! Have you thought about how you’ll ask her? Maybe take her to Switzerland, like Enzo did with Chari? When will you do it? Do you need help buying a ring?”

I take a deep sip and try to figure out which question to answer first.

“When I look for a ring, sure, you can help. But it won’t be anytime soon. You’re like a freight train, Lus.”

“Whatever. Just keep in mind you’re not the most romantic guy in the world. And Evie deserves something special.”

I give her a pointed look.

“Ok, you pulled off a whopper last weekend. But you had help.”

Smiling, knowing I’ve trapped her, I lean back against the bar wall. “Teamwork, Lus.”

We’ve been taught the same lesson by our parents, that more minds are always better than one. “Going it alone” is a foreign concept in the DeLuca family.

“I can’t believe we have a family yacht. Enzo said we could all use it anytime and just have to let him know. For the crew. Can you imagine? ‘Hello, Enzo, this is your sister.’”

Oh no. Her horrible British accent.

“‘Can you please ready the crew for this weekend? I’d like to take our family yacht out for a spin.’”

“First of all, you don’t take a yacht out for a spin. Second of all, your British accent is atrocious.”

A knock on the front door startles us both. It’s locked up and well past closing.

Lus jumps up but I stay her with my hand. Just in case.

“Let me get it.”

Coming from around the bar, I walk cautiously to the door, taking out the keys from my pocket. As I get closer, I relax, realizing it’s Evie. Opening the door, I don’t even get a chance to say hello as Evie’s arms are tossed around me.

What the hell is going on?

Evie

I still can’t believe this is happening.

It only occurred to me a few minutes ago, when Brax came out of the kitchen and he, Lusanne and Tris stared back at me as tears streamed down my face as usual, that they are all competitors. All three of them have a stake in DeLuca’s doing well.

Not Leoni’s.

But actually, it doesn’t matter.
