“Carlisle,” Terric shouted, pounding a fist into his palm. “That’s where he intends to go. But, if memory serves, the castle’s days away.”

“And no doubt full of King John’s soldiers,” Roland remarked.

“We should turn back,” Adelina suggested.

“Aye,” Terric echoed. “The longer Adrien has to keep the galley moored at Ravenglass, the greater the danger.”

“Adrien?” Adelina asked. “Your family risked two sons on this mission?”

Roland took her hand. “You didn’t think twice before helping Marguerite to escape John’s grasp. It was our duty to come to your aid.”

He cursed himself for a fool when disappointment flickered in her brown eyes. They weren’t the words of undying love he’d planned to utter. “We’ll go a little further,” he said in an effort to rekindle her smile. “That dowry money belongs to you both.”
