“I guess this is goodbye.” Her gaze flickered to him before she headed for the door.

“Pippa, wait!” He darted towards her, powerless to the tug of the thread tying her soul to his. She spun back to him, her wide eyes filled with tears that tore at his heart.

“I wish I knew how to fix this, Beauty,” he admitted, defeated.

She blinked. Her chin lifted with resolution. “Sometimes you can’t fix what’s broken. Sometimes you have to let the shattered pieces go because they are doing more harm to you and everyone else around you.”

His chest caved in with grief for the loss of the woman standing before him.

She opened the door and hesitated. “You should know that it wasn’t my father’s fault.”

“Pip—”

“It was mine.”

He sucked in a gasp. What?

“He wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for me and my health issues.”

His anger rose. She blamed herself? “But—”

She held up her hand. “Please don’t. I know I can’t control how my brain works, but it doesn’t change the fact that because of me, my father made a decision that put him in jail and that caused him to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Because of that, a little girl has to grow up without a mother.”

Nononono. She couldn’t blame herself. It wasn’t her fault. It was mine. He sucked in a lungful of air, his chest constricting with the realization.

She stepped forward and pressed her hand over his heart. A warm frisson erupted in his chest from her contact. “You deserve to find happiness, Mase.”

No. She had it all wrong.

Pippa turned and walked out the door, not turning back again. His chest heaved as every cell in his body screamed at him to go after her, drawing him to her like a powerful magnet.

He fell to his knees. She blamed herself all because he’d been too scared to see the truth. It was absurd that she would take the blame for Amanda’s death. The truth was, it was Mason’s fault. If he had listened to his wife and gotten her help, they probably wouldn’t still be married, but she might be alive.

What have I done?
