"You’re losing him!"

Fight. Fight. Fight. Fly…

"Nooooo!"

Time wasted. Numbness.

BEEEEEEEP. … … … …

Chapter Seventeen

ANISE

People swarmed around me, but my focus was on the door beside the nurse’s station. Doctors. I needed to see doctors. They'd told me they couldn't tell me a damn thing. Raphael's mother was on a flight from Paris and, unless I could prove that I was family, I wasn't getting a lick of information.

A flash of yellow clothing caught my attention as a woman rushed to the nurse’s station.

"My fiancé is here! I need to see him! Raphael Dubois. Is he ok? Can I see him?"

"Ma'am, you're going to have to calm down. I'll need documentation as proof that you're related to Mr. Dubois."

"Documentation! He's my fiancé!"

"You'll have to show…"

I watched her even closer. Her voice was familiar, but I couldn't understand why. I was sure that I'd never seen her before.

"Name?"

"Ruthgina Masterson."

I froze, missing the rest of the exchange. Her hair wasn't the same color, and she was thinner than I'd remembered. Probably feeling me stare, she turned my way with bright blue eyes. It was definitely her. I'd never forget them. It was the one thing I couldn't forget. They were ingrained in my head and I’d only seen them once.

Icily, she demanded, "What are you doing here?"

Instead of answering her irritated question, I looked at the nurse trying to get information from her.

"Ms. Masterson, I'll need some information from you about your fiancé. There were complications during the surgery..."

"What complications?"

I stood, unable to stay seated. I didn't move closer, but I listened intently. Ruthgina was getting more information than I had and I planned to use her for what I could.

“Did Mr. Dubois have any prior heart conditions? We’ll also need to get his health insurance information…”

“You’re worried about health insurance right now?!” Ruthgina yelled back.

“Ms. Masterson, let’s get you back into the waiting room for the family.”

The nurse escorted Ruthgina into the back, and I growled after them. I needed Claudia, Raphael’s mother, to get here soon. If what Raphael told me was correct, Ruthgina was no longer his fiancé and shouldn’t be deciding about his care.

Slowly, I returned to my seat, checking my phone to see if there were any new messages from Claudia. None. Not a single one. I checked the app that tracked her flight to see that she was still in the air. She’d land in approximately forty-five minutes and wasn’t that just too damn long?

* * *

“My son is here.”

The too calm voice made me look up from the magazine I’d been looking over. I couldn’t tell you a single thing about what was inside. I’d used it to calm my hands, idle my mind. Claudia.
