Shaking my head, I place the bag on the floor by the door and hold her waist. Bending down to stare into her eyes, I smile.

“I remember everything.” I pull her to me and wrap my arms around her in a tight hug. Her arms come around my back, and a relieved sigh leaves me.

After a few minutes, she steps back and smiles. “What snacks did you bring?”

“Popcorn, M&Ms, chocolate chip cookie dough because I know you rather bake them than eat store-bought and your favorite red wine.”

Her eyes mist over. She tries to blink them away before I notice, but I see the tears welling.

“How did you remember all that?” She shakes her head, emotions clouding her face.

“I never forgot about you, Lex.” I reach for her hand. “I was angry and confused as to why you didn’t want to be with me, and it may have taken me a few years to understand your reasoning, but I get it.”

“I wanted to be with you, but it was all on your terms.”

“I know.” My voice drops, and I step closer. My other hand holds the side of her face. “I didn’t see it back then.” We’ve spoken about this before, but I still feel like I need to tell her over and over again that I was selfish and blind but still loved her.

“We were young.” She shrugs.

“I was selfish.”

“That too.” She nods and laughs.

“Ready for a night in?”

Her hand grips my wrist, and she brings my hand across to her lips, kissing my palm.

“Yeah.”

I breathe out and grab the bag from the floor. Every time she lets me in a little bit more, I feel complete.

“Should we make the cookies first?” I look at her across from the peninsula in her kitchen.

“Of course.” She raises her eyebrows as if that were a silly question.

I chuckle and grab the package from the bag, opening it. Lex grabs a cookie sheet from a bottom cabinet and preheats the oven.

“I also thought we could order pizza when we got hungry.” I smile over at her as I break apart the cookie dough to place on the sheet.

“It’s like all my favorite junk food.”

“I’m hoping that’s the way to your heart.” I wink. “You know, keeping the monster in your stomach fed and happy.”

Lex laughs and playfully shoves my shoulder. “There are more ways to my heart.”

“I know.” I’m hoping to remind her about how we were while at the same time showing her how I’ve changed and grown up.

Lex grabs a piece of cookie dough and plops it in her mouth. “I think cookies are better raw.” She licks her lips. My eyes follow the movement, and I clear my throat, looking away to gain my composure.

“Cake batter, too.” I finally say.

“Yup. And brownies. I just love dough.”

“It’s got raw eggs.” I shake my head.

“Don’t some people put raw eggs in their smoothies or drinks or something? If we can accept that, then we can accept people eating raw dough and batter.” She shrugs, set in her opinion.

“You do what you want, babe.” I loop an arm around her waist and tug her to me, kissing her forehead.
