“No, babe. We’re in a whole different boat. Actually, we’re not even at sea. We’re firmly on the ground.” I push my head back and look at him as if he’s grown two heads.

“What?”

Hudson’s deep laughter vibrates against me.

“I’ve done a lot of thinking these last few weeks. Losing you propelled me to make decisions and take action.”

I sit back on my heels and stare at him with raised eyebrows.

“How about we have some pizza? It’s not stock of it, but I figured a box of the pepperoni would be a good start.” He gives me a dazzling smile. I swear it twinkles under the light.

“Wait. Is that pizza from the place I loved? What was it called?”

“Roman’s Pizza.”

“That’s right.” I nod.

“It’s cold, so we’ll have to microwave it.” He frowns.

“I bet that pizza even tastes good cold.” I stand and hold my hand out. “Let’s eat and talk.”

After heating the slices of pizza, we sit at the small round table in the suite. I stare at Hudson, still confused.

“You know I’ve had my issues with working at the agency.”

I nod silently.

“I felt lost as to what I wanted. I actually enjoy selling homes. I kept trying to bring in older dreams from childhood into the present, but it wasn’t the same,” he shakes his head. “I’m not the same.”

“That’s normal,” I encourage him.

“Yeah. Anyway, I want to work in real estate, but in a different way.”

“How so?” I pick at the pizza crust.

“Eat so that it doesn’t get cold again, and I’ll explain.” He lifts his chin toward my plate and takes a bite as if proving a point.

I eat and listen.

“I want to sell homes to people looking for a place to build memories. I don’t want to worry about huge commission rates and push aside people only because they aren’t seeking million-dollar properties.” He stands and grabs water bottles from the small fridge. I trail his movements. He demands attention. His tall frame, strong body, and confident strides are difficult to avoid.

“I spoke to my father and turned in my resignation. He wouldn’t have it at first,” Hudson laughs dryly. “I’m done. It’s time I live my life the way I want. That includes you.”

My eyes widen, shock clouding my expression.

“I know,” he shakes his head and smiles. “I never told you, but my mom tried to bribe Tristan with his trust fund in exchange for him telling her about our relationship. At the same time, my dad schemed a way to have me traveling to Texas the days you were in New York.”

“What?”

“Yeah,” his jaw ticks. “I told him that wasn’t going to work, and I changed the meeting. I don’t want them controlling my life anymore, and if I continue to work for the family business, I’m allowing them to.”

“What are you going to do?” I’m stunned he finally stood up to his parents.

“I found a small office. I’m branching out on my own. Hudson Homes. I want to find homes for people who appreciate it. Families, young people just starting out. Help them create memories they’ll treasure.”

“Wow,” I breathe out.

“In Hartville.”
