“Hey, I’m good. How about you? It’s good to see the both of you.” Lex’s dad is more closed-off, which I can understand. I hurt his little girl.
“We’re great. Just had dinner. We need to get out of the house, or we’ll age faster than we’re meant to,” Bianca jokes.
I chuckle and shake my head. “You look great.”
“Thank you. We have to get going, but I’m so glad I saw you.” She smiles kindly.
“You, too. Mr. Leon,” I nod.
“Hudson, nice seeing you,” he says politely, shaking my hand.
As I take a seat at an empty booth, people around me stare and whisper. Ah, small-town living. The gossip never dies down. I can imagine what will spread next—Hudson’s awkward interaction with his ex-girlfriend’s parents. There will be rumors about what our conversation was about. Ignoring them, I open my messages and frown. Lex went radio silent after that last text I sent her.
Hudson: I’m only suggesting what you already stated. If that’s what you want, I’ll be cordial and then head back to New York and you’ll never hear from me again
Lex: You’re making a big deal about planning a bach party
Hudson: You liked the word, huh?
Lex: If that’s what it’s called, I’ll use it
Hudson: Toby mentioned that you’ll be having a spa day. I’ll plan something for us to do that day, and then we can all have dinner that evening
Lex: That’s fine. They want to ski, so I suppose most of the trip will be focused on that
Hudson: Are you skiing?
Lex: Of course not. I’ll be on the ground more than standing on those stilts
Hudson: They’re not stilts lol
Lex: They’re horizontal stilts. I don’t know. No, I’m not skiing. I’ll stay at the resort and make sure the next event is planned and prepared, whatever that may be
Hudson: You’re a dancer and don’t have the grace to ski? I still can’t believe it
Lex: It is what it is
Hudson: Let’s meet this week to sort out details. I have a meeting on Tuesday, but I’ll be free Wednesday morning
Lex: I have a job
Hudson: That doesn’t open until the afternoon. We need to work through this, Lex. We’re both adults now, we can handle it. Hope and Toby deserve it
Lex: Fine
I smile in triumph and lean back in the booth. That was easier than I thought, though selfishly, I used Hope and Toby’s happiness to con her into meeting me. Did I manipulate the situation by guilting her? Yes. Do I feel bad about it? Only a little bit. It’s for a good cause. At least, that is what I’m telling myself.
After all these years, I still feel excited about spending time with Lex. I haven’t allowed myself the liberty to think much about her in the past, knowing it was for the best, but I’m an idiot for not realizing that she was and will always be the one who got away.
Wednesday can’t get here soon enough.
