René snorted and closed his eyes again. "I don't believe you."

No, I don't suppose he did. I'd certainly not proved it to him so far, but I would. His happiness and safety had become my first priority from the moment we met.

"I need to know what you heard and saw, René."

René sighed once more and opened his eyes to look at me. "I didn't actually see anything. I was hit from behind, which meant someone was waiting for me in my loft." René frowned. "I think I saw blond hair right before I passed out."

Blond hair?

Well, that was a start. Just not much of one.

"Can you remember anything else?"

"Someone was laughing while I was being hit."

I growled. "This bastard was laughing while he beat the fuck out of you?"

"Unless there was more than one guy beating me, then yes, but I didn't see anyone else."

"Just the blond guy?"

"I couldn't swear that it was a guy," René said, "but I'm pretty sure it was considering how hard he hit me. I don't know many girls that can hit that hard."

I did. I couldn't discount anyone until I had the walking dead man—or woman—in custody.

"I already have one of my best men on it," I said. "I'll find out who did this to you." And then I would make them pay. "I don't want you to worry about anything except getting better."

"Easier said than done." René groaned as he lifted his hand to his head. His eyes slid closed again. "My head is killing me."

My heart ached for my mate, but my gut boiled with outrage. He should never feel pain like this. He should never feel pain at all. This was totally unacceptable.

I turned and glared at the door. "Where is that doctor?"

"I'll go check, sir." Tashi opened the door and quickly stepped out.

René's hand gripped my wrist when the door slowly whooshed closed. I turned back to find him staring up at me. "Are we alone?" he asked.

"Yes."

René licked his lips, his eyes dropping down, before he whispered, "I need blood."

My eyebrows rose. "You need blood?"

René's brown eyes flickered up to me. "I'm half vampire."

"You're..." How had I not known that? I'd had a full background check run on him after that night in the club. I'd had his clan traced back for centuries. My information never mentioned my mate was a vampire.

I hadn't known Pierre was such an important person in his life either.

Obviously, we needed to talk.

"How can I help?"

René's eyes rounded. "You'll help me?"

I wasn't sure how I felt about someone feeding from me, but I also couldn't think of anything I wouldn't do for my true mate.

"Yes, but you'll have to tell me how to do it."
