“I’ll wake you up in an hour,” Tanith told her as she sidled down the hall to the closed door at the end. The entire surface was covered in stars and hearts and smiley faces, which Tanith knew would eventually be replaced by Keep Out signs and boy band hunks.

“One hour,” Hayley repeated, hovering in the doorway and waiting for Tanith to agree.

“One hour.” Actually, it would be closer to two. Her daughter’s complexion wasn’t looking great, and if today had been a good day, it meant she and Trudy did more than usual. So, that girl was getting two solid hours of sleep before they had their night together—then it was into bed by ten, just this once.

With her daughter’s door almost closed, Tanith sighed and turned back to find Trudy waiting for her in the foyer, shoes on and coat hanging over arm.

“Do you mind if I pay you next week?” Tanith asked. “I just need to move some funds around. Hayley’s bills and the renovation—”

“It isn’t a problem,” Trudy insisted warmly. “I know things are hectic right now. I understand.”

“Thank you.” Tanith sighed tiredly. “I’m honestly not sure how I can juggle everything for much longer. The gallery isn’t bringing in the money it used to, as much as I try to work my magic on it. It’s getting a bit stressful. Things are covered, of course, but I’d like to avoid more incidents like this one. It isn’t fair to you. Things are looking up a little though,” she said a little brightly. “I’ve got a date this week.”

“With that Blake guy you told me about?”

“The very one.”
