When their drinks were empty, the bear shifter duo wandered back to the bar for a refill, which Luther generously offered to pay for. Espie felt uncomfortable about it, but she also didn’t want to be rude, so she just let it go.

They’d come in separate cars, with Espie driving Miguel’s big pick-up truck mostly because she’d wanted full control of her movements and decisions, not depending on a man to get her home if she wanted to leave. Because of that, she couldn’t even really offer to pay for his gas for driving outside of Angel Fire, but she vowed to find some way to pay him back.

Maybe they’d go get a late night snack after this. Wasn’t that what all the college kids did after a night of drinking – go for pizza? Espie wouldn’t know, since she’d never been a typical twenty-one year old, but she could try it for one night at least.

“Look, I haven’t had a first date in…” Luther sighed in her ear, forcing her to bite back a moan. “Well, a really long time. I’m sorry I was so awkward at the sports bar. I think I just suck at this.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she assured him with a warm smile. “I’m having fun. I…also suck at first dates. We’ll just call it even and forget it ever happened.”

“I can live with that.”

Espie nabbed the black straw from her drink between her teeth and sucked back all of her remaining vodka cranberry drink. “Come on, Luther. You brought me here to dance, and so far we haven’t even tried.”

“You wanna dance, pretty lady?” he asked, grinning broadly. “Then I’m your man.”
